From <i>Cabinet</i>: Jacket Required: Observatory: Design Observer

by karlcow

from book binding to dust jacket full of advertisements, there is now for paper books the decorative item. In Japan, all bookshop clerks will propose a book cover once you bought one. Indeed, in the train, café, subways, you will never know what people are reading.

The last evolution of the advertisement on books is advertisement in books with patents by Amazon for in content ads on the kindle.

by decembre

APA Style Blog: How Do I Cite a Kindle?

by karlcow

For the reference list entry, you’ll need to include the type of e-book version you read (two examples are the Kindle DX version and the Adobe Digital Editions version). In lieu of publisher information, include the book’s DOI or where you downloaded the e-book from (if there is no DOI). For example:

Bits Of Destruction Hit the Book Publishing Business: Part 1

by karlcow

One massive wave crashing down is confusing enough. But when three crash at the same time, even seeing what's going on (let alone predicting how things will play out) becomes really difficult. These three big new waves are:

1. The digitization of print books by Google Book Search.

2. Increasing consumer acceptance of e-books, mostly because of the Kindle.

3. Print on demand.

Printing The NYT Costs Twice As Much As Sending Every Subscriber A Free Kindle

by karlcow

According to the Times's Q308 10-Q, the company spends $63 million per quarter on raw materials and $148 million on wages and benefits. We've heard the wages and benefits for just the newsroom are about $200 million per year.

After multiplying the quarterly costs by four and subtracting that $200 million out, a rough estimate for the Times's delivery costs would be $644 million per year.

The Kindle retails for $359. In a recent open letter, Times spokesperson Catherine Mathis wrote: "We have 830,000 loyal readers who have subscribed to The New York Times for more than two years." Multiply those numbers together and you get $297 million -- a little less than half as much as $644 million.

downloads of Stanza [App Store link], an ebook reader for the iPhone and iPod touch (395,000 and counting), versus the number of projected US Kindle sales (380,000). For those unfamiliar with Stanza, it's a free application that lets users download books over the air, as does the Kindle. All of Stanza's offerings are free works in the public domain, and flipping pages is a breeze with the touch screen.

Kindle - livre electronique par Amazon

by karlcow
