When someone wants to license your art, characters, photos, articles or music, how does it shake out? Chances are that these negotiations involve expensive lawyers on both sides of the deal.
If you're running an enlightened company, you might have a Creative Commons license hanging out there for non-commercial, "fannish" uses. (Creative Commons publishes a suite of widely adopted licenses that allow rightsholders to release their work for sharing, remixing, etc.)
But somewhere between Creative Commons and full-blown, lawyerly license negotiation is a rich, untapped source of income for creative people and firms with portfolios of iconic material. To cash in, you just need the courage to let go of a little control.

Mail online have reported that UK pensioners with an existing equity release scheme could save up to £300 million collectively by switching to an alternative plan at a lower interest rate. Equity release rates are fixed for life and have reduced over the past few years from around 8% to approximately 6%. The site claims that customers who have loans with the longest established lenders such as, Northern Rock and Mortgage Express could gain significantly by switching. It is estimated that approximately 10,000 pensioners could save up to £30,000 in interest payments over a 15 year period by switching their current equity release plan to one with a lower interest rate.

These maps show the distribution of income (per capita) around the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the US (all those with population greater than 2,000,000). The goal was to test the "donut" hypothesis — the idea that a city will create concentric rings of wealth and poverty, with the rich both in the suburbs and in the "revitalized" downtown, and the poor stuck in between. This does seem to have some validity in older cities like Boston, New York, Philadelphia, or Chicago, but in newer cities it is not the case. Instead of donuts, one finds "wedges" of wealth occupying a continuous pie-slice from the center to the periphery.

As for netbooks, Acer shipped around 2.4 million units in the third quarter and with demand for the Aspire one climbing in the US market, the company's shipment in 2008 will reach or surpass its goal of 5-6 million units, according to Gianfranco Lanci, the company president.
Lanci also added that in 2009, the global netbook market scale will expand to 30-35 million units, with Acer to grab a 40-50% share, equivalent to shipments of around 12-15 million units.
Acer has announced results for the third quarter this year with consolidated revenues of NT$159.2 billion (US$5 billion), representing 31% on-year growth. Operating income was US$145 million after expensing employee bonuses and remuneration. Net profit after tax was US$95 million and EPS was NT$1.22.
Combined consolidated revenues in the first three quarters of 2008 were US$12.8 billion, growing by 31% on-year. Operating income reached US$314 million after expensing employee bonuses and remuneration. Net profit after tax was US$278 million and EPS was NT$3.64.

NEW YORK, April 16 (UPI) - A New York lottery winner said he disguised himself with a marker-drawn beard when he accepted his prize to protect his new fortune from thieves.Michael Perez, 51, said he used a marker to draw a goatee on his face and further disguised himself with a hat and sunglasses so thieves would not recognize him while he accepted the $14 million ceremonial check from the New York Lottery, the New York Post reported Wednesday."I've got to look out for my family," Perez said of his disguise.Perez, a former warehouse worker who recently became unemployed, said he used a portion of his income-tax refund to buy a lottery ticket with six randomly chosen numbers: 1, 8, 10, 31, 52 and 57.The choice paid off for Perez in the state's April 1 drawing."The first thing I want to do is take care of all my debts," "But before I do anything serious, I've got to go to Disney World." he said.
