I’ve made another improvement to the comments system, and this time I think it’s pretty innovative (well, I think the last one was as well, but I do like this one).
This only works 100% correctly in Mozilla, and I’m not sure why. IE and Opera get 90% of the way there, and that’ll do until I figure out what the problem is. Anyway, on to the idea…

* The image or element with a background image doesn't have to be visible.
* background-position is now supported, including an IE absolute position fix. (bottom: -1px || bottom: 0px)

Try this: When viewing a movie on YouTube, add &fmt=18 to the end of the URL. In addition to slight video improvement, you should also notice increased audio quality. Notice I use the word “slight.” I hope YouTube goes further than this humble baby step towards something more like Vimeo’s level of quality.
There’s also a Firefox extension that supports higher-quality YouTube playback (among a list of other enhancements).

In 2004, I started the Exceptional Performance group at Yahoo!. We're a small team chartered to measure and improve the performance of Yahoo!'s products. Having worked as a back-end engineer most of my career, I approached this as I would a code optimization project - I profiled web performance to identify where there was the greatest opportunity for improvement. Since our goal is to improve the end-user experience, I measured response times in a browser over various bandwidth speeds. What I saw is illustrated in the following chart showing HTTP traffic for http://www.yahoo.com.

I have replaced an old Athlon 64 X2 4200+ at 2.2GHz with the 6400+ in a Windows Vista desktop PC machine featuring the Asus M2N-E SLI motherboard, 2GB of 800MHz DDR2 memory, the Asus EAH3850 512MB video card, and a Cooler Master 620W power supply. The performance improvement after this upgrade is significant and goes up to 46 percent in some tests.

This is a rating bar script done with PHP and mySQL that allows users to rate things like can be done on Netflix or Amazon, all web 2.0-like with no page refresh. It is a major improvement on the previous version because it is now unobtrusive, meaning that if Javascript is off it will still work (although the page will refresh). You can also set the number of rating units you want to use (i.e. 4 stars, 5 stars, or 10 stars) on a rater to rater basis (see samples below or read the docs). A few other changes were made as well - see the docs for details. Note that this script isn't tied to any specific system (such as WordPress), so you should be able to adapt it to your situation without too much trouble.

Super Simple Light Tent - Instructables

I was inspired to do this project after seeing the PVC light tent posted on the MAKE blog. This light tent uses a cardboard box, and some white material (Tyvek) and allows you to take reasonable photos of products such as bottles, watches, jewlery, small objects, etc. There is lot's of room for improvement but for the sake of 15 minutes I hope you will agree it's pretty good :)
