How to make community members stick at djst’s nest
an interesting conclusion about how to turn new and casual contributors into long-time community members: the key is to distribute ownership.
To wrap up, there were several things that motivated me to stay active in the Mozilla community: * A belief in the mission of the project — to create a web browser that supports and promotes the use of open standards * An interest in the technology — initially with the Gecko logo as my hook * The feeling of belonging in a community of people with similar interests * The desire to give something back to a project that gave (and still gives) me the best browser in the world for free * The experiences gained by managing a website — HTML, CSS, server configurations, and perhaps most importantly, the English language * The recognition and respect from Mozilla project members for my contributions * The pride of being responsible for an important piece of the project
Gridshore » How WTF’s improve code quality awareness
It is very important to report the WTF to the developer who produced the code. Subversions “annotate” or “blame” function provides a means to blame someone for the existence of a specific piece of code. The best way to report this back is through an informative and educational discussion, where everyone could be involved. The factoring should preferably be done by the developer responsible for the code, perhaps with the assistance of the developer who reviewed it. As a result, quality awareness will have improved within the development team.

Blogo Numericus -- Google Index as world heritage
Because it is our index. At least partly, because the content is ours. And I won’t deny that it is partly Google Inc. property too, as the manufacturer and operator of the index. But it’s partly ours as well, and that is a very important point to make.
Therefore, may be we can begin to consider the Google index as a common good shared between Google and all the mankind.

Criticism • Side effects often dominate over intended consequences of any project or endeavor. • Abstract views may make us callous or may badly reflect ground truth. • Ignorance is bliss. The world is filled with sob stories. Best to not dwell? • Such services may be used solely for the most banal aspirations and goals. • Struggle may be important - making things too easy may harm fitness and lower diversity of skills and abilities over long term. • What about poor people who are outside of any implied technological social network? • Why not just help people around you? • Any technology should go hand in hand with day to day personal practice that is unmediated? • Feedback loops may be created that accelerate and disrupt society. • Virtual and visual only for curators; not tactile; uses only one sense. A concern?

Draft: The Web platform — Edward O’Connor
The Web platform encompasses many tools that live outside of browsers, but the important part of calling a technology a piece of the Web platform is that it works with the public content of the Web. For instance, a web crawler like Google’s doesn’t run in a browser, but processes public Web content, so it and its underlying pieces are clearly built on the web platform.
Secure Cookie Authentication for CouchDB | Jason Davies: Web Design and Development
I’ve recently been working on an implementation of cookie-based authentication for CouchDB. This is important for pure CouchDB applications (couchapps), where browsers communicate directly with CouchDB. Currently browsers can be authenticated using HTTP basic auth but the popup login box can be disruptive and confusing for users.

Entering contact information into a mobile device is not a trivial task. Phones are *not* optimized for text input, making this important task an awkward and time-consuming interaction for even the most proficient user.

Near Future Laboratory » Blog Archive » Follow Curiosity, Not Careers
In any case, this idea of shifting ones practice and area of activity is quite important. Following your curiosity rather than a career path/ladder/trajectory seems incredibly wise. To do otherwise, seems naive and thoughtless. Yes — the practicalities of life intrude. You need (more likely want) nice things that money buys. Money comes from jobs. More money comes from certain kinds of careers.
