labs.moto.com » Blog Archive » DIY Android Home Energy Monitor

by Spone
Lately we’ve been tinkering with deploying Android beyond the phone (using Google’s open-source Android to connect devices to each other and the web), so we thought we’d see if we could leverage the efficiency of Android on a BeagleBoard, the accessibility of wireless webcams, and the ease of a Flickr feed to a custom Google Gadget to track the ups and downs of our metered utilities. Why webcams? While there may be a few compelling (low-cost, low-impact) products out there to monitor your electric meter, there are no comparable products for reading gas or water meters. So until the really smart grid arrives, here’s a way to chart your whole utility spend on your own Google homepage.

HTML5 and video in email - Blog - Campaign Monitor

by Spone
As momentum quickly builds behind HTML5, the new version of HTML and XHTML, we've had a close eye on what impact this might have on HTML email in the years to come. While the finer details of HTML5 are still being finalised, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera have offered support for much of the new technology for some time.

The Kickstarter Blog - Kickstarter and the 1,000 True Fans

by greut

From the beginning, we’ve encouraged creators to tap into their networks as much as possible: there’s clearly a desire from audiences for greater interaction, more access, a more intimate relationship. Twitter has demonstrated that. And so what Kickstarter does is answer the next part of that question: once you have your 10 or 100 or 1,000 or even 1,000,000 True Fans, what comes next?

You allow them a seat at the table. You invite them to become your patrons. You give them an opportunity to have an impact and it’s not just your story anymore, it’s theirs too. And that’s the kind of success that lasts.

Stefano’s Linotype » On Data Reconciliation Strategies and Their Impact on the Web of Data

by karlcow

No matter what user interfaces will drive the user interaction, the dream of being able to search the web of data following relational connections (say, somehow looking for “the height of all towers located in Paris”) dies miserably when it’s powered by a vastly sparse and unconnected graph.

The Whole Earth Effect — Plenty Magazine

by karlcow

The Whole Earth Effect

How did a publication with just a four-year run help shape a community so prolific that it went on to inspire Google, Craigslist, and the blogosphere; save six American rivers; and shape sustainable business practices as we know them today? Forty years after the first issue of the Whole Earth Catalog, this oral history of the publication, as told by those who made it and those who read it, tracks the long-lasting impact of a short-lived journal that altered the course of the world.

On the Identity Trail - Lessons From the Identity Trail

by karlcow

During the past decade, rapid developments in information and communications technology have transformed key social, commercial, and political realities. Within that same time period, working at something less than Internet speed, much of the academic and policy debate arising from these new and emerging technologies has been fragmented. There have been few examples of interdisciplinary dialogue about the importance and impact of anonymity and privacy in a networked society. Lessons from the Identity Trail: Anonymity, Privacy and Identity in a Networked Society fills that gap, and examines key questions about anonymity, privacy, and identity in an environment that increasingly automates the collection of personal information and relies upon surveillance to promote private and public sector goals.

Jennifer Tee

by ainos
Skyline 2006 Raadszaal Stadsdeel–kantoor Zuid Oost, Amsterdam, Pays-Bas Commande publique "Skyline is a permanent artwork in the council chamber of the southeastern part of Amsterdam. Tee and Niessen have created a secret language with which they build a skyline, made out of silkscreen prints in a system using 6 patterns and 6 colors. First, Tee made drawings of motifs that are characteristic of the Bijlmer, such as shopping carts, African symbols and footballs referring to the Ajax-Arena. Richard Niessen then converted these drawings into patterns and signs. With a legend the signs can be decoded into well-known names of streets and buildings in the Bijlmer. The wall, which gives the impression of totems or flags, is beautiful in its details and it has a great impact as a whole."

Hello, Twitter | stopdesign

by sbrothier & 1 other
Yes, it’s true. After reading a bit of speculation over the past few weeks, I’ll confirm here that I am, indeed, joining Twitter. I don’t remember ever being as eager or excited to start a new job as I’ve been with this one. (Thus, why I only took one week off between jobs.) Over the past year, I spoke with several organizations about coming on board to lead a design team. But Twitter felt the like most natural fit from the very start of my talks with the team. It’s still early in Twitter’s history. The company is small. Its user base is growing rapidly. And I see lots of potential to directly impact and to help shape the Twitter brand.
