Jan-Piet Mens / whatmon: Mozilla Extension for Monitoring Whatever

by Xavier Lacot & 1 other , 1 comment (via)
whatmon periodically reads a short bit of XML text from a web server (in my case: Apache). The XML contains an integer status and a single line of text. In practice, that line of text can contain whatever the administrator desires. I want an indication of the health of the mail queues on a number of mail servers we have inhouse. The line of text therefore contains two-letter codes with which I can identify the hostname of the mail server in question as well as a count of mails on the queue for each of the servers in question.

The Coral Content Distribution Network

by cyberien & 18 others
Coral is a free peer-to-peer content distribution network, comprised of a world-wide network of web proxies and nameservers. It allows a user to run a web site that offers high performance and meets huge demand, all for the price of a $50/month cable modem. Publishing through CoralCDN is as simple as appending a short string to the hostname of objects' URLs; a peer-to-peer DNS layer transparently redirects browsers to participating caching proxies, which in turn cooperate to minimize load on the source web server. Sites that run Coral automatically replicate content as a side effect of users accessing it, improving its availability. Using modern peer-to-peer indexing techniques, CoralCDN will efficiently find a cached object if it exists anywhere in the network, requiring that it use the origin server only to initially fetch the object once. One of Coral's key goals is to avoid ever creating hot spots in its infrastructure. It achieves this through a novel indexing abstraction we introduce called a distributed sloppy hash table (DSHT), and it creates self-organizing clusters of nodes that fetch information from each other to avoid communicating with more distant or heavily-loaded servers. A preliminary deployment of CoralCDN has been online since March 2004, running on the PlanetLab testbed. As of January 2006, it receives about 25 million requests per day from more than 1 million unique clients.

Angry IP scanner - program for analyzing networks

by cascamorto & 5 others
Angry IP scanner is a very fast IP scanner and port scanner. It can scan IP addresses in any range as well as any their ports. Its binary file size is very small compared to other IP or port scanners. Angry IP scanner simply pings each IP address to check if it's alive, then optionally it is resolving its hostname, determines the MAC address, scans ports, etc. The amount of gathered data about each host can be extended with the available plugins. It also has additional features, like NetBIOS information (computer name, workgroup name, and currently logged in Windows user), favorite IP address ranges, customizable openers, etc.

How to change the hostname of a Linux system | MDLog:/sysadmin

by rmaltete (via)
Normally we will set the hostname of a system during the installation process. Many peoples don’t care about this, and don’t change the hostname even if for example this was set to something really stupid by the datacenter that installed the system (most likely they will set this to “debian” on any debian installation, etc). For me, it is important to see on each one of the ssh screens I will have open at any time a different hostname that is relevant and will give me quickly the information on what system I am logged in.
