Our Wedding: Part 2 | The uber-emotional ceremony

by blackgoldfish
Still, I wanted to tie in our fair / carnival / summer party-bbq theme a bit so I made this bunting (banners or flagging or garlands, whatever you want to call them) to go along the aisle. We shopped for a couple months to find cool patterned fabrics in our wedding colors.

Inhabitat » Butterfly Bamboo Homes Are Hope for Thai Orphans

by karlcow

Humanitarian design organization TYIN Tegnestue from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology conceived the project in response to a need for more dormitories for Karen refugee children in the village of Noh Bo on the Thai-Burmese border. The six woven bamboo huts, dubbed Soe Ker Tie, or The Butterfly Huts because of their “winged” appearance were designed with the children’s happiness and health in mind.

Near Future Laboratory » Blog Archive » The Map Is Here For You To Use

by karlcow

Departing Madrid early on a Sunday morning, I found this paper map of the Metro, tucked neatly within the seams of a pre-fab wall, ready for re-use. I wondered, who was on their way out of Madrid, thinking that they could not in good conscience throw away their worn map, looking about for a way to pass it along to another visitor.

Another instance of a Thoughtful Act.

Why do I blog this? Sudden interest in observing improvisatory social practices which are signals of a sort, not always of a “service” or designed object to adopt that practice into a commodified instantiation. But sometimes merely a curiosity that helps us better understand who we/people are, like waypoints along a contour of individual and collective humanities.

the interesting thing with the map offered here is that it is an pseudo anonymous gift. At an instant t when the map has been put, the local people around the person may have identified the gesture and see the person (unlikely but let's say they have at least seen the act) BUT the people who will benefit of it in the further instant have probably no connection at all with the source.

A signature (automatic or not) defines a contract that tie to all kind of responsibilities and legibility which are not necessary beneficial for the group as large. The anonymous nature is defined by the time span and the a-connection between the two events (giving the map/receiving the map). Both gestures will be locally identified but the odds of being connected very small. On the Web, the odds of connection are very high and change completely the social dynamics of giving and sharing information. The network has a "memory" of the context.

Yahoo Formally Rejects Microsoft Bid [SearchEngineWatch]

by kuroyagi
"AOL doesn't have its own search index, but licenses Google's, so an AOL tie-up would likely see Yahoo keep its search and search ad operations. AOL has been investing heavily in advertising technology, adding Tacoda (behavioral targeting), AdTech (ad serving, big in Europe), Lightningcast (video ads), Quigo (contextual ads) and Third Screen Media (mobile ads) to its newly formed Platform A business, built around the base of its Advertising.com ad network."

When the bough breaks [dive into mark]

by sbrothier & 1 other (via)
But as I stood in the Apple store last weekend and drooled over the beautiful, beautiful hardware, all I could think was how much work it would take to twiddle with the default settings, install third-party software, and hide all the commercial tie-ins so I could pretend I was in control of my own computer. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to my eye Apple isn’t beautiful anymore. I’ve worked around it or ignored it for a long time, but eventually the bough breaks.

The concepts it sets out to prove are the clearest ones implied by its name: that data is weightless, that storage is wireless, and that connectivity is ubiquitous. [...] Because we will not go gracefully into this idea of weightless data - it’s been a long time coming, preparing us for the migration of our data offsite. We use our Gmail, we use our flickr, but we love our cables because our cables tie us to our stuff like a leash to a hyperactive toddler.
