Most pirated books of 2009 – publishers shouldn’t be worrying | TeleRead: Bring the E-Books Home

by karlcow

Authors who put their head in the sand are also mentioned. J.K. Rowling, who won’t allow ebooks of her works to be published, has every single one of her books available digitally as they were either transcribed or scanned by fans. So much for the ultimate DRM – don’t publish! Even that doesn’t work. Simon & Schuster shot itself in the foot by not publishing an ebook of Stephen King’s Under the Dome, as it was almost immediately available on the net within days. How many sales did they loose by delaying ebook release? Note that Rowling and King are among the top 25 most pirated books. All those sales lost, lost lost because publishers don’t understand the ebook space.

# The way views are counted has improved. I learned ten days ago from Julien Hory that Dailymotion counts a view only after a couple of minutes, a time determined as the average viewing time on the site. Before you reach that mark, your view does not count. Cruel, we are not used to this, but it probably gives a much better view of reality.

Square

by sbrothier & 2 others
In February 2009, Jim McKelvey wasn’t able to sell a piece of his glass art because he couldn’t accept a credit card as payment. Even though a majority of payments has moved to plastic cards, accepting payments from cards is still difficult, requiring long applications, expensive hardware, and an overly complex experience. Square was born a few days later right next to the old San Francisco US Mint. Today the Square team is focused on bringing immediacy, transparency, and approachability to the world of payments: an inherently social interaction each of us participates in daily. We’re starting with a limited beta and rolling out to everyone in early 2010.

John Resig - Google Groups is Dead

by night.kame & 1 other

When you create a public group everything will go well for a couple days, at most. Without fail an onslaught of spam will start to come through your group - I've even seen it happen within the first day. It happens to every group and doesn't matter how well you advertise it (or try to hide it). After having watched Google Groups for as long as I have I can only assume that there exists no spam filtering whatsoever. Or, if there is any, it's the most grossly incompetent spam filter I've ever seen.
