When someone says ideology, I often, think « church » and all its derivatives : zealots, blasphemy, etc. An healthy ecosystem has diversity is hackable and makes it possible to have different outcomes.

1. Prehistory: « Open » being a kind of underground culture for a very long time became finally famous. Circumstances of the society, new priorities, new generation of people (geeks) helped to achieve that.

2. The age of iron: For anything which is successful at a macro level in the society come the second generation of people who want benefits of it. First they are the initial « believers » who were living from another activity and wants to live accordingly with their beliefs. It is the first shock and the first softener of the ideology. They have to make compromise with the other markets of the ecosystem. It’s when we start to hear *pragmatic* discourses. Few of them will be successful and then will start bending some rules.

3. The age of industrial revolution: The ecosystem of is here and there are a lot of secondary activities and people. Some people who were not believers but who were just mere employees of the believers. This includes marketers, businessmen, business angels, etc. They want to make a living, they want to invest into it. A lot of tools are available and people using them don’t even know they are the byproduct of this original philosophy. Some people think we have to be careful and keep a minimum of the principles and they organize control organizations (certification, labelling, etc.). It can even reach the legal and political framework of the society.

4. The age of financial market: The original philosophy is gone, the system remains. Some of the original believers think it is a big success for the philosophy. Some getting older became a lot more flexible than when they were young. Some are angry (sometimes very angry) because the principles have been forgotten. They will fork, restart a small group (prehistory) or go on a deserted island and exclude themselves with broken flowers in their dreams.

This happens in many many social groups. Look at organic culture for example, or certain think tanks. It all depends on which levels you want to be, which matters to you. Global or local.

The International Phonetic Alphabet - limited free version

by ycc2106
The following page provides a graphic interface for exploring the International Phonetic Alphabet. To use the resource simply click on any link to hear an illustrative example. For example, most rows in the Pulmonic chart (Manner of Articulation) have descriptive audio that explains each row completely. Other charts (Non-Pulmonic, Vowels etc.) have detailed audio descriptions available by clicking on the chart title. Within each chart, clicking on any IPA character will play an example of that sound. With consonants, you will hear the sound in exclusion followed by an intervocalic example. You will need a recent browser and QuickTime installed on your computer in order to use the page to the fullest. You will also need a UVic NetLinkID to access these copyrighted materials.

Latest busks | BANDSTAND BUSKING

by gregg
There are loads of bandstands in parks across London, and most of them are looking fairly tattered from lack of use. When did you last see/hear one surrounded by hordes excited by the sounds? ...well we hadn't so we decided to do what we could to change that, to fill the parks once more (at least for a wee while every couple of weeks) with some talented people capable of carrying a tune or two.

Socio-Technical Assemblages « Service Design Research

by karlcow

There’s a strong tendency to see services as ‘things’: we often hear that services are ‘more complex’ than products. All kinds of means to grasp the complexity of an airline or a hospital can be applied – cybernetics, actor-network theory, etc. But the interaction between a prostitute and his or her john or jane is complex in a way I don’t think these approaches capture.

GTD

by night.kame

What people don’t do is leave it there, undecided. But they do about e-mail. They also do it by paper. That’s why most people are highly voice-addicted, and most cultures are voice-addicted. That’s why interruptitis is so huge out there, because if you have something you consider timely and meaningful that somebody needs to know and hear, you’ve got to deliver it to them by some sort of auditory means, because that’s the only thing they’re processing.

Well, I just go, “Duh! Somebody give me the rationale for this.” And there is none. E-mail wouldn’t be a problem if it blew up like your answering machine did once you got more than a screen full.

NASA - Apollo 11 Conversations Earth Didn't Hear Now Online at Nasa.Gov

by rax262
As Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins flew on Apollo 11 to a lunar landing in July 1969, the world heard communications between the crew and Mission Control live as they happened. But Earth did not hear the private conversations between Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins, although they were recorded aboard the Command Module Columbia and Lunar Module Eagle.

a456: Designing The Friendly Skies

by jeanruaud
Last week, articles in The Daily Mail and Gizmodo concerned that most improbable of objects: an Airbus A380 jumbo jet outfitted with custom luxury interiors. As an airborne palace to be built to the tune of $485 million for Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the Airbus is proof that even a seemingly limitless budget can transcend the limits of conspicuous consumption. It is not uncommon to hear about palatial homes and even cities created for personal use. Such spending and extravagance boggle the mind. Yet one would be hard pressed to find an object that demonstrates ostentation like a private airplane.

TechTLV : Can you hear me now? The operator-centric mobile model is over

by oseres
Can you hear me now? The operator-centric mobile model is over Last week, T-Mobile Germany made some waves by banning Skype for the iPhone. Some might read this as a long overdue reassertion of operator power, but I disagree. A few months ago, I learned from a reliable source that a major operator was deliberately not shipping a very popular mobile phone model that they knew their customers wanted because the phone didn’t give them enough control over what the customer does. The phone was too open. This is exactly what Google was talking about back in 2007 when it insisted on openness as a condition to bidding in the FCC’s spectrum auction. Ten years ago, when I covered mobile operators on Wall Street, they used to cite their vast capital expenditure on building on their cellular networks as their core differentiator. This was the reality behind Verizon’s amusing “can you hear me now?” campaign.

You're being insensitive (Scripting News)

by greut

When I needed heart surgery in 2002 and the doctor told me my life was over if I didn't get it, you might say he was being insensitive, but he was telling me something that I knew was true that I needed to hear. Three days later after the surgery, recouperating, the surgeon told me if I resumed smoking I would be dead in three years. Again, insensitive (he said it with a smile on his face believe it or not), but I'm glad he said it. The way he said it made it easier to quit. Sometimes the truth hurts. You can't blame people for saying things they believe, even if it hurts you to hear it.

…many things are hard to hear, for some reason. They are true.

modified toy orchestra on MySpace Music

by Neewok

Modified Toy Orchestra are a collection of abandoned and reconstructed Childrens electronic toys, conducted by a selection of musicians.

Its rare to hear an electronic record that has no midi, no sampling, no synthesizers, no laptops, in fact no conventional instruments of any kind, yet Toygopop by the Modified Toy Orchestra is just that.

GIFfun(tm) by Stone Design is the key to creating Web Animations quickly - you can use Create(tm) to make the individiual slides, or drag in any Image File directly into the GIFfun window, and the best part is that GIFfun is totally free, in cluding the well-commented source code. GIFfun was originally created because I wanted to add yet another feature to Create, but since this tool is of use to every web page designer, I thought it would help spread the word of Cocoa and to provide you with source and make it free because I can hear Monty saying "The Price Is Right".
