HTML5 Super Friends

by Spone
We, the undersigned, wish to declare our support for the direction in which the HTML5 specification is heading.

Duoh.com

by fabifab
Veerle, graphic design degree in hand, started Duoh! in 1992, focusing on freelance print work. In 1994, she was wooed by Geert Leyseele. Clutching her strong graphic design principles under one arm, and her heart in the other, she took the leap, and a little while later, beautiful little Duoh! n.v. was born. Geert Leyseele As it turned out, Geert wasn't just another pretty face. Veerle's hero brought superpowers to her business: X-ray vision to see around corners into the future of the web, a drive to move to Web Standards, an eye for project management, and the ability to leap wireframes and IA obstacles in a single bound. When Veerle's blog became famous around the world for her tutorials and insights on design, CSS, and other subjects, fascinated readers saw the picture in the heading and asked, "Is that the designer's girlfriend?" No, it was Veerle, the other happy half of Duoh! Life is our inspiration We inhale the richness of life : * sharing love, laughter, and knowledge with our friends and web community * absorbing design (from galaxies to retro menus to bathroom faucets, we see it everywhere) * putting our minds to design puzzles * digging deeply into markup and code so our designs can sing * delighting in chill house and progressive house music, art and artists, lovely sandy beaches, and biking through the countryside and, then, we exhale websites. Growing up but staying small We love what we do and want to do it ourselves, not manage others. We create websites for some Big Clients (and fresh, little start-ups, too), and choose our clients just as carefully as they choose us. Each day, we throw ourselves passionately into the task of becoming better at work and at play. The rest of the Duoh! story? Look around; our work says it all.

Visualization of Geo-annotated Pictures in Mobile Phones | Semantic Web Dog Food

by karlcow

In this work, a novel mobile browser for geo-referenced pictures is introduced and described. We use the term browser to denote a system aimed at browsing pictures selected from a large set like Internet photo sharing services. The criteria to filter a subset of pictures to browse are three: the user's actual position, the user's actual heading, and the user's preferences. In this work we only focus on the first two criteria leaving the integration of user's preferences for future developments.

Title tags are an important part of search engine optimization

by softstor
One of the most integral parts of search engine optimization of a web page is its title tag. The title tag is not necessarily the heading of the web page. It is basically all the text you find in the title bar of the web browser. And everything that you find in between title tags of the page is called title text.

Re: Hey Microsoft! cool it with CSS points ok? from Todd Fahrner on 1997-10-24 (www-style@w3.org from November 1997)

by karlcow

Note that the full range of _relative_ sizes specified by the author is preserved in this scheme, which may simply be necessary to differentiate the 12 levels of heading in, say, HTML 5.

Todd Fahrner, first mention of HTML 5? in 1997.

Philanthrocapitalism: after the goldrush | openDemocracy

by karlcow

What separates good and bad performers is not whether they come from business or civil society, but whether they have a clear focus to their work, strong learning and accountability mechanisms that keep them heading in the right direction, and the ability to motivate their staff or volunteers to reach the highest collective levels of performance.

jQuery clueTip Plugin

by camel
The clueTip plugin allows you to easily show a fancy tooltip when the user's mouse hovers over (or, optionally, clicks on) any element you designate in your script. If the element includes a title attribute, its text becomes the heading of the clueTip.

Snowbound in Japan - New York Times

by karlcow

It was after a three-hour train ride north from Tokyo, heading for Tsurunoyu Onsen, that I learned Tsurunoyu isn’t an onsen at all. “It’s really more of a hitou,” Moto, my guide, delicately pointed out. We were in Honshu Island’s far-north prefecture of Akita, winding our way up the unpaved road to the 300-year-old mountain lodge, and Moto seemed especially intent on setting me straight.

A List Apart: Dynamic Text Replacement

by rike_
Text styling is the dull headache of web design. There are only a handful of fonts that are universally available, and sophisticated graphical effects are next to impossible using only standard CSS and HTML. Sticking with the traditional typefaces is smart for body text, but when it comes to our headings — short, attention-grabbing blocks of text — it would be nice to have some choice in the matter. We’ve become accustomed to this problem and we cope with it either by making the most of the few fonts we have, or by entirely replacing our heading-text with images.

Typhoon Man-Yi pounded the island of Okinawa with torrential rain before heading north-east toward the island of Kyushu in southern Japan with sustained winds of about 104 miles per hour (167 kilometers per hour). Man-Yi was classified a super typhoon earlier today, with winds gusting to as much as 184 mph, the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center Web site reported.

SKOS Use Cases and Requirements

by karlcow
Knowledge organisation systems, such as taxonomies, thesauri or subject heading lists, play a fundamental role in information structuring and access. The Semantic Web Deployment Working Group aims at providing a model for representing such vocabularies on the Semantic Web: SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organisation System).

It's a Wild Ride - Learning that Works

by knann
It's a Wild Ride is an extended interdisciplinary project that studies roller coaster design in science, mathematics, and language arts classrooms. Students learn and apply laws of motion, linear equations, and technical reporting. As the eight week project unfolds they move from learning content-specific knowledge and skills to applying what they learn in a group design task. Ultimately students must convince the theme park to accept their group's design through persuasive presentations. Look at interactive activities under the heading "Internet Activties to Expand Roller Coaster Knowledge"
