CR Blog » Blog Archive » Harry Beck: The Paris Connection

by karlcow & 2 others

The importance of Beck’s rectilinear, topologic 1933 diagram is widely recognised and praised by graphic designers. Many wonder why Beck never extended his ideas outside London. The answer is, he did – to the nearest major subway network to London: Paris.

Mindful of Paris’s prominent position as the most visited city on the planet, the forward-thinking head of ratp’s design department, Yo Kaminagai, ordered his map designers to begin a quiet cartographic revolution from 1987 which finally resulted in the commissioning of a diagram.

GOOD » Environmental Arithmetic with Dr. Harry Atwater»

by karlcow

Atwater explained that the power needs of the entire U.S. could be met by solar panels filling a square approximately 100 miles on a side. This is 10,000 square miles—about the size of area between Phoenix to Tuscon.

la littérature jeunesse sur le blog de la BNF

by decembre

Typogridphy — A Typographical and Grid Layout CSS Framework From Harry Roberts of CSS Wizardry

by oqdbpo & 2 others
Grids & Typography Typogridphy is a CSS framework constructed to allow web designers and front-end developers to quickly code typograhically pleasing grid layouts. Based on the popular 960 Grid System, Typogridphy allows you to create grid layouts which are versatile and great looking. Typogridphy is made of fully validate, semantic and strict xHTML, and validate CSS. It also uses a typographical method know as ‘creating vertical rhythm’, whereby all adjacent lines of text line up horizontally, regardless of line breaks and new paragraphs. This method in itself isn’t that difficult to accomplish — using pixels. I have created Typogridphy using ems, meaning the layout is zoomable — try holding your Ctrl key and scrolling your mouse wheel.

thwartedefforts » Race Conditions with Ajax and PHP Sessions

by formation_ajax & 3 others
This one's been in the hopper for a long time. Back in February, I came across, through Ajaxian, Marc Wandschneider's "Troubles with Asynchronous Ajax Requests and PHP Sessions", and Harry Fuecks's 'AJAX and Session "Race Conditions"'. These are very interesting and well written articles about an often difficult to understand, debug, and combat problem: race conditions. The responses in the comments are all over the place, from claims to that this is how its supposed to be, to this isn't a problem with PHP it's a problem with HTTP being stateless, to PHP doesn't actually have this problem. The facts appear to be somewhat different. In general, everyone's right, at least a little bit. As with many problems of this type, particularities of each environment can render different results.

Four days before it hits bookstores, I've got a copy of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." I downloaded it from a link posted at the Bittorrent file-sharing site the Pirate Bay.
