Running Vhosts Under Separate UIDs/GIDs With Apache2 mpm-peruser On Debian Etch | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

by camel & 1 other (via)
This article explains how you can install and configure apache2-mpm-peruser on a Debian Etch server. apache2-mpm-peruser is an MPM (Multi-Processing Module) for the Apache 2 web server, very similar to apache2-mpm-itk, but faster (almost as fast as apache2-mpm-prefork). mpm-peruser allows you to run each of your vhosts under a separate UID and GID - in short, the scripts and configuration files for one vhost no longer have to be readable for all the other vhosts. It is based on metuxmpm, a working implementation of the perchild MPM. The result is a sane and secure web server environment for your users, without kludges like PHP's safe_mode.

Changing UIDs and GIDs without harming your server

by BlueVoodoo
It's important to know what happens to file ownership in AIX once you make a UID or GID change. If you don't understand the results of altering a UID or GID, you could cause serious issues to your server and environment.

Backup Ubuntu using rdiff-backup -- Ubuntu Geek

by camel
rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another, possibly over a network. The target directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs are stored in a special subdirectory of that target directory, so you can still recover files lost some time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an incremental backup. rdiff-backup also preserves subdirectories, hard links, dev files, permissions, uid/gid ownership, modification times, extended attributes, acls, and resource forks. Also, rdiff-backup can operate in a bandwidth efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup and ssh to securely back a hard drive up to a remote location, and only the differences will be transmitted. Finally, rdiff-backup is easy to use and settings have sensical defaults.

Checklist for Securing PHP Configuration

by dzc & 3 others (via)
"Checklist pour le fichier php.ini Voici une checklist de sécurité, qui passe en revue toutes les directives PHP et leur donne une valeur plus contraignante que la valeur fournie par défaut dans PHP. Limitez les ressources et les abus, soyez vigilents sur les ressources et fonctionnalités que vous laissez disponibles sur le site. Le seul point discutable et l'utilisation du safe_mode, qui ne sert pas à grand chose. Même en version gid."

GPLHost:>_ Web hosting open source (GPL) control panel

by camel & 3 others
Domain Technologie Control (DTC) is a GPL control panel for hosting. Using a web GUI for admin and accounting all hosting services, DTC can delegate the task of creating subdomains, email, and FTP accounts to users for the domain names they own. DTC manages a MySQL database containing all the hosting information. It has support for many programs (bind 8 and 9 and compatibles, MySQL, Apache 1.3, php4, qmail, postfix 2, courier, dovecot, proftpd, webalizer, mod-log-sql, etc.) through config files and/or MySQL plugins (when the service is non-critical). It can also generate backup scripts, calculation scripts, and config files using a single system UID/GID and monitor all traffic accounting per user and per service. Since version 0.12, DTC is fully skinable and translated into several languages (Chinese, English, Spanish, French, Dutch, German, Italian, Russian, Hungarian, Romanian and Polish).

That encrypted password is an MD5 hash of the word 'test'. mkpasswd is a great utility for generating MD5 passwords. The 1000:1000 corresponds to the uid and gid of the "virtual" user we created in Part One. The home directory includes everything but the word before the @ in the email address.
