City in a Bottle | About

by karlcow

What is "City In A Bottle"?

City In A Bottle is an interactive project bordering between art, science and gaming, funded by the Flemish Audiovisual Fund.

The game environment is based on the AI-principle of emergent behaviour. Organisms (plants and insects) start off with basic behaviouristic rules and goals. If an opponent is edible, attack it. If an opponent is stronger, flee. When cornered, fight back. Hide in a flock of relatives to minimise the chance of being singled out. Follow a food trail marked by a relative. Expand and defend a productive environment. Grow colourful feathers/flowers to incite reproduction.

Complex social behavior then emerges by itself as organisms interact with each other. Species with a good strategy will survive and evolve over time, will adapt, will look different. The gaming enviroment changes procedurally, there is no preprogrammed story or pathway. We don't control the biotope. The creatures will find their own way and either co-exist or fight for limited space and food.

The resource requirements in manpower and services in the Park include additional ranger personnel and their training, the creation of a documentation centre on the island itself, and improvement of signage and visitor facilities. The new management plan currently being prepared with the active support of the world Monuments Fund will make a substantial contribution to the improvement of the present situation, it is recommended that this should be submitted to the world Heritage Committee for comment by the secretariat and by ICOMOS as soon as it is completed.

Fund a film, Share your dream

by gregg

Andrew Cuomo Charity Scams?

by starmuscle
A charity operated by "Get Smart" actress Anne Hathaway's boyfriend is being investigated by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, the New York Post reported. Until recently, Hathaway's beau, 29-year-old Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri, sat on the children's charity's board of directors, The Post reported. Cuomo's office refused to tell the Post why it was investigating the Manhattan-based charity, which says its programs include vaccinating Third World children. Cuomo's probe comes two months after Follieri was arrested in Manhattan on charges that he bounced a $215,000 check — written against an account that a source said had just $39 in it — to a New Jersey man for services to his real-estate company, the Follieri Group. Charges were dropped in May. Earlier this year, Follieri settled a lawsuit filed by Los Angeles billionaire Ron Burkle, who accused him and the Follieri Group of "systematically misappropriating" at least $1.3 million of more than $55 million that Burkle's company had contributed to a joint venture to buy and redevelop Catholic Church properties. Burkle's suit said Follieri used the money to fund an extravagant lifestyle that included private jet travel for himself and Hathaway, as well as for loans of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the foundation.

A Sumatran elephant plays with his trainer at the Elephant Training Centre in Minas, Indonesia's Riau province February 29, 2008. The Sumatran elephant, the smallest of the Asian elephants, is facing serious pressures arising from illegal logging and rapid forest conversion to palm oil plantations. As forests shrink, elephants are increasingly closer to fields and cultivated land, generating conflict with humans that often result in the death of the elephants by poisoning or capture, according to a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report in 2007. Is Low NAV fund is better than High NAV fund?

by nag_sunny
We always think that the low NAV means the fund is cheaper. Low NAV implies high number of units alloted, however the total investment will remain unchanged with the Low NAV and high NAV fund as the total investment is the multiplication of total units and the NAV. What matters is the performance of the fund. Take for example, a fund with NAV Rs.20 is giving 20% returns and a fund with NAV Rs.100 giving 40% returns. Assume we invest Rs. 10000 in both the funds. Even though we got more number of units in the first fund, the final value of the investment in the funds become Rs.12000 and Rs.14000 respectively. This shows that the NAV is not the deciding factor in selecting the mutual fund, but the performance of the fund.

Tax Saver Fund vs Unit Linked Equity Schemes

by nag_sunny
According to the prevailing tax laws, one can save tax on the investments in noted mutual funds, insurance, ULIPs upto Rs. 1 Lakh. ULIPs are work as mutual funds exception, they provide insurance also. However linking the insurance with the investment is debatable. In my view insurance should be taken by everyone but at the same time it should not combined with investment. Investments are something different to the insurance. Another point to be noted here is all the ULIPs charge 20% to 40% of the investment as administration and other charges at the initial stages. So we cannot expect the high returns until and unless we continue investing atleast 5 years. For instance the ULIP companies charges 20% for the first year, around 12% in the next year, 4% afterwards (Applicable for some schemes only, may vary for each scheme). Coming to the mutual funds, the total charges must not cross 2.5% of the total investment. The investments may have to keep for 2-3 years. Tax saver funds provide the advantage of investing in equity apart from the tax benefit with much lesser administration charges. So I believe the tax saver funds beat the ULIPs. I believe the invester should make wise decision when starting his investment in the equity. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.
