The American Image - The Photographs of John Collier Jr.

by sbrothier
The American Image: The Photographs of John Collier Jr. was developed with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology and College of Education’s Technology & Education Center (TEC) at the University of New Mexico collaborated with Ideum to develop this interactive website. Most of the photographs that appear on this site were taken for the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information (FSA/OWI) during the war years of the 1940s. The FSA/OWI hired John Collier Jr. to document day-to-day life in America with a focus on issues of civil defense and public morale. The images that appear in the collection were taken from across the country, from New Mexico to Maine and provide a snapshot of ordinary life in those extraordinary times.

The title of the work (Land of The Free) refers to the American Anthem, and makes reference to Archibald MacLeish's 1938 book of FSA photographs. It also refers to a degree of irony when talking about personal 'freedoms' when one would choose to 'copy' the look of cowboys, sci-fi characters and pop stars. I want the viewer to see the relation to ideology; here are the effects of American mass-culture; consumed and re-enacted by British people in my photographs.

Color Photographs from the FSA and OWI Home Page

by smudie
The color photographs of the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information Collection include scenes of rural and small-town life, migrant labor, and the effects of the Great Depression. A significant number of the color photographs concern the mobilization effort for World War II and portray aircraft manufacturing, military training, and the nation's railroads. The 1,600 color photographs produced by the FSA and OWI photographers are less well known and far less extensive than the 164,000 black-and-white photographs in the collection.
