From <i>Cabinet</i>: Jacket Required: Observatory: Design Observer

by karlcow

from book binding to dust jacket full of advertisements, there is now for paper books the decorative item. In Japan, all bookshop clerks will propose a book cover once you bought one. Indeed, in the train, café, subways, you will never know what people are reading.

The last evolution of the advertisement on books is advertisement in books with patents by Amazon for in content ads on the kindle.

That means that Google has more informational power over us, and that’s a concern. A related concern is the fact that we must understand and realize whatever we say today will or might be held against us in the future.

BBC - Digital Revolution Blog: Rushes Sequences - Biz Stone and Evan Williams interview - USA (Video)

by karlcow

there was a popular blogger and he also had a Twitter account and he was complaining that his cable was out, and he was I'm going to write about this cable company, Compass and how terrible they are and its going to be the number one search result in, in search engines for year to come. And they were monitoring Twitter search for any mentions of they're brand name. And they saw that within a few minutes and they replied to him on Twitter, and they said what seems to be the problem, they were going to send a van out to your house. And they had his cable fixed in like 30 minutes, so the next day the blog post was, Compass has great customer service, and it was like a, you know a complete reversal and we were like wow, they're really smart about it,

The full extent of executive pay

by karlcow

The pay gap between executives and the average American worker has always been pretty big, and seems to have increased as the world's economy grows. But with the recent recession bringing the most desperate financial conditions the world has seen since the Great Depression, one could be excused for expecting this gap to be reduced.

WordPress › Free WordPress Themes

by mozkart (via)
While our directory is full of fantastic themes, sometimes people want to use something that they know has support behind it, and don't mind paying for that. Contrary to popular belief, GPL doesn't say that everything must be zero-cost, just that when you receive the software or theme that it not restrict your freedoms in how you use it. With that in mind, here are a collection of folks who provide GPL themes with extra paid services available around them. Some of them you may pay for access, some of them are membership sites, some may give you the theme for zero-cost and just charge for support. What they all have in common is people behind them who support open source, WordPress, and its GPL license.

16. Why does Firefox load my SWF twice?

Firefox 3 has a known issue that sometimes causes a swf to be 'double initialized'. The problem appears to be fixed in their codebase, but has not been released yet. See the following bugs for more details: bug 438830 and bug 445599.

Or, if you have "Disable cache" selected in your Firefox Web Developer Toolbar extension a double load will occur.

by karlcow & 1 other

As data visualization often needs to reach a broad audience the browser is becoming the number one tool to publish and share visualizations. A lot of visualizations require user-interaction to unleash their full potential, thus interactive applets that run directly in the browser are a a great way to analyze the data at hand. Beside the usual suspects like Flash, Silverlight and Processing, JavaScript is quickly gaining ground in the field of interactive visualization embedded in websites. We’ve collected 13 16 JavaScript visualization libraries that help you get started faster, keep it flexible and develop with higher reliability.

Zend_Amf with full Zend Framework | Space of Flex/AIR technologies

by srcmax
There are many examples on the web how to use Zend_Amf as a standalone component but couldn’t find one that actually shows how you can run it with the rest of the Zend Framework. Main benefit of running it in a way I will demonstrate in this post is that requests to AMF service classes are automatically bootstrapped with configuration, database initialization and other Zend components.
