I recently discovered memcached which is a distributed, object caching system originally developed by Brad Fitzpatrick of LiveJournal fame. You can think of memcached as a giant hash table that can run on multiple servers which automatically handles maintaining the balance of objects hashed to each server and transparently fetches/removes objects from over the network if they aren't on the same machine that is accessing an object in the hash table. Although this sounds fairly simple, there is a lot of grunt work in building a distributed object cache which handles data partitioning across multiple servers and hides the distributed nature of the application from the developer. memcached is a well integrated into the typical LAMP stack and is used by a surprising number of high traffic websites including Slashdot, Facebook, Digg, Flickr and Wikipedia. Below is what C# code that utilizes memcached would look like sans exception handling code

HyperDither is an OS X image processing utility that converts color or grayscale images to 1 bit black & white using a sophisticated dithering routine. Specifically, HyperDither implements the “Atkinson” dithering filter.
Years ago, during the development of the first Macintosh, Bill Atkinson (of HyperCard, QuickDraw, MacPaint & now nature photography fame) discovered a very elegant dithering filter to convert greyscale image data for the 1 bit black & white Mac video display. The dithering produced by this routine was much higher quality than the now-a-days ubiquitous Floyd-Steinberg or “Error-diffusion” filter (used by QuickTime, PhotoShop).

Via journalism.co.uk, we come across a local TV anchor and photog who chuck
the fame and fortune, the exposure and paycheck of jobs on the local TV news to create their own local online shows for Madison, WI, at StoryBridge.tv. They want to do stories that “validate” — their word — people doing good things locally.
Based on their beta stories, I wish they also chuck more of their local-TV ways and make shows that are a little rougher, less polished, more authentic. I also hope they put their videos up on YouTube et al and make them embeddable so they can be part of the local conversation. And I hope they’ll also do stories that are useful, not just TV-heartwarming.
Now having given those caveats, I’m enthusiastic about what they’re doing. They will surely avoid the fires and press releases and weather mania that inhabit most local TV nows — because they can’t afford it. And so they will go out and do real stories, showing their old newsroom what’s possible. There’s no reason any individual or team in any town couldn’t do this; the tools and distribution are all there.
They’re also doing innovative things, starting, for example, a nonprofit arm that will allow locals to support series that may not have commercial appeal.

Sono spesso molto belle, senza lavoro e senza futuro, ma tutto cambia quando arrivano in Italia, è un fenomeno di massa molto diffuso quello di scambiare la moglie con una una più bella e giovane immigrata dell’est europeo, gli effetti sono devastanti almeno per le famiglie che in qualche modo hanno a che fare con questi problemi.
Di solito sono colpiti soggetti maschili sposati e con figli di età media a partire dai 35/40 anni fino ad arrivare ai quasi moribondi, queste ragazze sono disponibili e farebbero di tutto per sposare l’italiano che le mantenga, non è difficile quindi immaginare il perché di tante separazioni e divorzi, è un furto alla famiglia italiana, le nostre donne non possono competere, hanno un altro ideale e pensiero, ma soprattutto non hanno “fame” e si sa’, per fame si fa qualsiasi cosa.
Ci vorrebbe un controllo alle frontiere, visto che ogni settimana arrivano decine forse centinaia di autobus dall’est, apparentemente per turismo e per lo più sono “turiste”, le quali una volta arrivate in Italia spesso non tornano a casa loro e restano nella speranza di trovare la “dote”.
Che sia il caso di mettere dei DAZI alle giovani ragazze dell’est prima di entrare in Italia?
