The Mobile City » Blog Archive » Locative media and the situationists

by karlcow

What struck me was that locative media practitioners often refer back to the situationists as some kind of ancestors, as if they’re working in the same vein. …

But that, to me, seems to be where the similarities end. As alive-and-kicking situationist muse Jacqueline de Jong pointed out during the evening, the situationists wanted one thing above all else: to destroy and disrupt our cushy society. They were sick of it, vowing never to work a day in their lives. They probably would have laughed if they had seen that their ideas had been cherry-picked for ripe concepts. The derive, the detournement. All simple concepts that they purposefully packaged in complex and artistc jargon. And we fell for it.

Abandon Ship! The City Is Sinking!

by macbros
Holy shit we’re getting a lot of rain here in Fredericton NB, Canada! So much that the police are closing down roads here in the city because of flooding. When I was at work today, I was actually surprised at how high the river was, and that was earlier in the afternoon. It’s still pissing like crazy out there right now and it’s later in the evening. I can expect that a lot of low lying areas will get some pretty bad flooding if this afternoons river height was any indication.

Guardian Unlimited: Arts blog - books: Opening a dream bookshop

by karlcow

The Big Green Bookshop now has its own blog where you can follow its progress. And, OK, maybe I can be a tad impatient when it comes to some bookshops, but I wish Simon Key and Tim West all the luck I can muster. As Simon says himself: "We want to give the residents of Wood Green a shop that they're proud of, a place where there's always something happening, be it an author event, a reading group, a coffee morning, an evening of music or poetry, or just a place where they can be inspired by something they find on the shelves.

mrt memo: WinXP software disaster recovery

by delavigne (via)
nstalled and uninstalled a lot of programs the other day. I also needed to clean up some of that notorious Windows Registry. I did it by hand and also used one registry cleaner program to eliminate all erranous records (I think it was Eusing Free Registry Cleaner). That all led (zeppelin) to a disaster - I could log into Win, but it logged me right out again. So I was stuck logging in and out in the evening at work - it was my work PC. So not to mention I went home frustrated, I also thought is this the time that an it-person is supposed to go and get drunk in the nearest bar? Of course I didn't get drunk (yet). I did what every respecable engineer would do - research. I made a "disaster recovery plan", that simply stated that I need to do a backup of useful data before I try some recovery measures.

Right side up

Quoted: I've been postponing trying this out right side up.  Finally got around to it earlier in the evening.  I find that my lines were looser and more confident in the last one that I made.  In this one there is more of a likeness.

Nightlife-Dating

by jogee_feroza
It is getting closer to the weekend and people are talking about which bars to have a drink at and where to go to dance until the early morning. The prospect of going out is really tempting but there is one problem, you don’t have enough money. And what about the next weekend? Does the above scenario feel familiar to you? It certainly does to many because going out is a real money-burning activity. It is however easier for some than others to manage to both have fun and don’t spend all their money, simply because it’s cheaper in some cities than others. The annual Saturday Night Index provides studies about how much it costs to spend a Saturday evening out in different UK cities. Factors included in the study are such as fees for buses, taxis and entrance as well as the prices of a late-night meal. While the latest study shows that the average cost of going out in the UK has dropped by almost £6, it also shows how big differences there could be between different towns. In the cheapest town, Bristol, a night would cost you £12.16, which is about £20 less than if you would go out in London. While cities such as Manchester and Leeds followed Bristol as the cheapest ones, the big surprise was that Newcastle which was one of the last year’s cheapest cities, now is the second most expensive one.
