Japanese Dolls on the Western Toyshelf
Dolls from Japan were very popular in America and Europe through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On these pages, I have collected illustrations and references that suggest the place of the Japanese doll in the minds of American and European children, and of the adults who bought them toys and moralized those toys.

Visitors to the Prison Valley site will construct their own narrative. Reaction to the project was mixed. Most commissioning editors loved the interactivity of the site, but questioned whether the topic of the US prison system would prompt interest among European audiences. “Rather than going to the U.S., why didn’t you tackle the situation in the French banlieue for example”, said the BBC’s Nick Fraser.

Tony White is the author of novels including Foxy-T (Faber and Faber) and the non-fiction work Another Fool in the Balkans. Tony also co-edited the fiction anthology Croatian Nights (Serpent’s Tail/VBZ). Balkanising Bloomsbury is a fiction project by White which reworks the archive of existing texts about the Balkans, from travel writing, Hague tribunal transcripts and mass media texts, using experimental literary techniques to create completely new works of fiction which explore ideas of European identity.

A massive increase in international co-operation and significant investment in awareness-building and training are essential if the concept of an Internet of Things (IoT) is to be turned into a meaningful reality, says a European Union-funded project in its final report, “RFID and the Inclusive Model for the Internet of Things.”

ESO - Scientific Meetings: IVOA Interoperability Meeting November 2009
The International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) organises two Interoperability meeting per year. The second meeting of 2009 is being hosted by the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO), and will be held in the main building of the the ESO Headquarters, on November 9-12 in Garching bei München, Germany.
