Infrastructure provides the basic needs for society, and sustainable infrastructure systems are essential for the survival, health and well-being of a society. For developing countries, the civil and environmental engineer are at the epicenter in seeking means to enhance human life through modernization of infrastructure as evidenced by provision of shelter, water, and transport, amongst others.

The current rate of urbanization and industrialization has caused a rise in environmental issues, involving environmental mismanagement which has been associated with unforeseen global catastrophes. The problems are further aggravated with environmental degradation such as soil erosion, depletion of water resources, etc.

In order to meet these multifaceted challenges, proper planning, implementation and verification exercises are required, via an integrated, multidisciplinary and holistic approach. The global momentum for sustainable development must now lead to practical applications of the engineering and science of sustainability.

Marshall Alexander - Paper Engineer

by sbrothier & 4 others
I am a Dutch paper engineer, based in Arnhem, and my work mainly focuses on the creation of papertoys. I either create completely new characters from scratch or I transform existing characters into papermodels. My speciality is one-piece papertoys, models that consist of a single flat piece of paper, which by intricate folding is transformed into a 3-dimensional model. I also create more complex templates consisting of several parts that are glued together to construct the final model. I've have done commissioned work for the toy industry, for promotional purposes and for books and magazines. Growing up in the seventies and eighties, my personal work is heavily inspired by retro design, videogames, movies, bright plastic toys and TV cartoons. Most of this work can be downloaded for free from my site. So get your knives and glue out, download some of the models and start building. Enjoy!

Why front-end developers are so important to the future of businesses on the web

by marco
The web developer (sometimes also called a client-side developer, front-end developer, web architect or front-end engineer) has a huge skill set and a job description to match. They are often expected and required to excel in many disciplines, and have good working knowledge of many others

Yahoo Search Engineers, Google Wants To Hire You

Matt Cutts of Google has blogged that Google is willing to hire Yahoo Search engineers. Matt said, “if you’re an excellent Yahoo engineer with solid experience in search, Google is hiring.”

Add Links To WordPress List Pages - This, WordPress, Page, ‘Example, Example, Subpage - WP Engineer

by mozkart (via)
Not infrequently, the menus on blogs, created with WordPress, having static links. This may initially seem easier and less trouble, but if changes or maintenance by users who have no knowledge or access to the templates occur, it is cumbersome and error prone. Therefore I prefer to use the necessary template tags and using the help of parameters that are not desirable (exclude) or desired (include) pages load. In addition, you can add content via the Hook, which I will explain briefly.

Customer-centered Business - Peter Drucker and Web Marketing | Management Tools for Startups and Small Businesses

by greut

What is our business is not determined by the producer but by the consumer. It is not defined by the company’s name, statutes, or articles of incorporation but by the want the consumer satisfies when he buys a product or service. The question can therefore be answered only by looking at the business from the outside, from the point of view of the customer and the market what the consumer sees, thinks, believes and wants at any given time must be accepted by management is an objective fact deserving to be taken as seriously as the reports of a salesman, the tests of the engineer or the figures of the accountant — something few managements find it easy to do. In management must make a conscious effort to get honest answers from the consumer himself rather than attempt to read his mind.

Why we love Semantic Web technologies - TechnicaLee Speaking

by karlcow

RDF is a data standard that is both expressive enough to represent any type of data that’s connected to the server and also flexible enough to handle new data sources incrementally. URIs provide a foundation for minting identifiers that don’t clash unexpectedly as new data sources are brought into the fold. Named graphs give us a simple abstraction upon which we can engineer practical concerns like security, audit trails, offline access, real-time updates, and caching.

HTML5 isn't a standard yet - W3C Q&A Weblog

by night.kame

The W3C does not, and never will, publish real standards because it is not a standards organization: It's a CONSORTIUM (you know, that "C" in W3C is there for a reason - look it up!). Standards and Standards Bodies must be endorsed by governments and legally enforceable. W3C recommendations are simply "recommendations". There is no legal consequence to not following or fully conforming to a "recommendation"...

Sur sa page publique, il indique "I work as a software architect/standards engineer for Opera Software."

CMF Format - ModdingWiki

by sylvainulg (via)
valuable information about the CMF format which i tried to reverse-engineer back in the "Recreative Game Maker" era, due to the lack of proper edition tool. My guess is that such tool did not exists except in the form of "take that MIdI file, and use this SBI (sound blaster instrument) for that midi instrument, etc. Perhaps they even simply had an OPL2 midi synthetizer so that they could plug a midi keyboard on it and be happy.

Geber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abu Musa Jābir ibn Hayyān (Persian: جابر ابن حیان) (born c. 721 in Tus, Iran–died c. 815 in Kufa)[2], known by his Latinized name Geber, a prominent Persian and Muslim polymath: a chemist and alchemist, astronomer and astrologer, engineer, geologist, philosopher, physicist, and pharmacist and physician. A Raw converter for Mac OS X (10.4 or 10.5 only), supporting almost all available digital Raw formats made for photographers by a photographer-software engineer with unmeasurable amount of help and tutoring from my friend, professional photographer Iliah Borg. We just got fed up with those converters made by programmers for their upper management :) Also I want to express my special appreciation to Alex Tutubalin (the link is in Russian) for providing this project with web hosting on early stages when I didn’t have this site!

Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site

by kasi77 & 12 others
High Performance Web Sites: The Importance of Front-End Performance In 2004, I started the Exceptional Performance group at Yahoo!. We're a small team chartered to measure and improve the performance of Yahoo!'s products. Having worked as a back-end engineer most of my career, I approached this as I would a code optimization project - I profiled web performance to identify where there was the greatest opportunity for improvement. Since our goal is to improve the end-user experience, I measured response times in a browser over various bandwidth speeds. What I saw is illustrated in the following chart showing HTTP traffic for http://www.yahoo.com.
