Facebook: How to Eliminate “Dead Friend” Suggestions

by srcmax & 1 other

Last week, in conjunction with its latest redesign, Facebook released “suggestions for helping friends,” a feature that aims to get you to assist your friends that don’t appear to be actively using the site and “reconnect” you with old contacts.

One unfortunate side effect of the feature: it started recommending those you’d rather not connect with, and in some cases, deceased friends.

HP Smart Web Printing - Choisir et organiser ce que l'on veut imprimer....

by decembre
When I do need to print, HP's addon gives me the option to combine multiple web pages on one sheet of paper, eliminate elements I don't need to print, and it even allows saving to PDF. Always nice to see the big boys release something great for free.

keybr.com - take typing speed test and practice typing online

by oseres & 3 others
Have you ever wished that you had a way to practice typing so that you could become a more efficient and capable keyboard jockey? Typing at the “speed of thought,” perhaps? Enter Keybr.com — the flash–based typing instructor you’ve been waiting for! Keybr.com is very straightforward. You can choose from three basic lessons that start with a certain number of keys on the keyboard, and then, as you progress through the lessons, more keys are introduced to the mix to make things a little tougher. As an added bonus, our software keeps track of all your mistakes and your words–per–minute (wpm) — and even creates graphs of your day–by–day performance. But, things get even better! Once you have determined that the lessons you have completed have reached their maximum result, get ready to play with custom mode, where you can edit and personalize the text that you wish to practice! Very bare–bones, but oh, so functional. Finally, to up the entertainment level of your typing lessons, you can import content from a web site or blog into Keybr.com to type it out. But why even bother to learn touch typing? The answer is simple — it is healthier for you, faster and more accurate. Blogging, writing long documents and e–mails, instant messaging with your friends, and even coding sophisticated computer programs will become much easier and more enjoyable once you eliminate distraction of hunt–and–peck typing. If you are curious about how touch typing appears to onlookers, please watch a couple of short YouTube videos demonstrating really high typing speed:

Kaya 蚊屋 Mosquito Netting « Vegder’s Blog

by karlcow

Ka ( 蚊 or か) is mosquito. Kaya (蚊屋 or かや) is mosquito netting. It can also be – and more often is – 蚊帳. Mosquitoes came first and civilization followed with its masses just waiting those little annoying pests. And feed we did. Researching this entry I ran across one source which said that the Japanese had figured out – mainly through the use of the kaya – how to eliminate malaria.

WordPress › Support » Image/Media Uploader problems

by bouilloire
Additional: A new issue in WordPress 2.6 occurs when you have a custom directory for file uploads. The upload will work, but the link/thumbnail link will be wrong and so the image won't appear. This is a bug which can be fixed in one of two ways (either works): a) Specify the correct URL to the upload directory in the "optional" field just below the custom image path field. b) There's a new wp-includes/functions.php which will eliminate the issue. Download it and replace your existing wp-includes/functions.php file with it. Je me disais bien qu'il y avait un truc de pété.

Cold Boot Attacks on Encryption Keys - Center for information technology policy

by rike_
Contrary to popular assumption, DRAMs used in most modern computers retain their contents for seconds to minutes after power is lost, even at operating temperatures and even if removed from a motherboard. Although DRAMs become less reliable when they are not refreshed, they are not immediately erased, and their contents persist sufficiently for malicious (or forensic) acquisition of usable full-system memory images. We show that this phenomenon limits the ability of an operating system to protect cryptographic key material from an attacker with physical access. We use cold reboots to mount attacks on popular disk encryption systems — BitLocker, FileVault, dm-crypt, and TrueCrypt — using no special devices or materials. We experimentally characterize the extent and predictability of memory remanence and report that remanence times can be increased dramatically with simple techniques. We offer new algorithms for finding cryptographic keys in memory images and for correcting errors caused by bit decay. Though we discuss several strategies for partially mitigating these risks, we know of no simple remedy that would eliminate them.

Spam and Virus filtering for e-mail with UNIX

by BlueVoodoo
Look beyond tools like SpamAssassin and Amavis to see how you can extend them and provide additional filtering facilities to lower the amount of spam hitting the e-mail boxes of your users. Most companies use spam and virus filtering services on their UNIX platforms, but there are some methods that you can use that help improve your filtering scores and might even eliminate spam reaching inboxes.

mrt memo: WinXP software disaster recovery

by delavigne (via)
nstalled and uninstalled a lot of programs the other day. I also needed to clean up some of that notorious Windows Registry. I did it by hand and also used one registry cleaner program to eliminate all erranous records (I think it was Eusing Free Registry Cleaner). That all led (zeppelin) to a disaster - I could log into Win, but it logged me right out again. So I was stuck logging in and out in the evening at work - it was my work PC. So not to mention I went home frustrated, I also thought is this the time that an it-person is supposed to go and get drunk in the nearest bar? Of course I didn't get drunk (yet). I did what every respecable engineer would do - research. I made a "disaster recovery plan", that simply stated that I need to do a backup of useful data before I try some recovery measures.

47 Excellent Ajax CSS Forms

by srcmax & 7 others
Forms needs a solid visual structure, a profound hierarchy of form elements (Fields and Labels), powerful techniques and Functionality (AJAX) to make the form look and work creatively. There is a great bunch of creative, outstanding and individually designed from scratch forms. Thanks to AJAX, we can provide real-time feedback to our users using server-side validation scripts and eliminate the need for redundant validation functions and processing data. Let’s take a look, hopefully you’ll find new ideas you can develop further on your own.

How to secure an SSL VPN with one-time passcodes and mutual authentication | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

by camel
SSL-based VPNs were designed to eliminate the need for complex configurations on the user's PC. Unfortunately, that was before the dangers of public WiFi networks and tougher regulatory requirements came into being. Thanks to WiFi, many attacks that were difficult are now quite simple. In particular, a man-in-the-middle attack can intercept SSL-encrypted traffic, rendering SSL-based VPNs useless - even if it's protected by a typical one-time password system. The man-in-the-middle can easily feed the one-time password into the SSL-based VPN within the alloted time.

Re-Thinking How To Address And Eliminate Fear

by francisk
Here's an article for MLM distributors and network marketers that talks about how to overcome the fears that hold people back in their business. Often people are told to "Face the fear and do it anyway" but this is often only a short term solution. The article talks about how to banish fears permanently.

TURN | The world's first automatic targeting ad network

by cyberien & 2 others (via)
Turn is the world's first automatic targeting, bidded CPA ad network. Which means advertisers can enjoy benefits that no other advertising network can deliver: bidded CPA pricing to eliminate risk, blended targeting to increase relevance, and automatic targeting to simplify campaign management. The result: better performance and higher return on investment. At Turn, everything we do is focused on the goals you want to achieve—from site visit to product purchase to lead generation—and the price you want to pay. Our advanced targeting technology goes beyond manual targeting by blending site analysis, past performance, categories, audience, and over 60 other variables to select the most relevant graphical and text ads. And everything is automatic. Turn's technology dynamically selects and weights these variables to determine the best targets for each ad, eliminating the guesswork, time and complexity of manual targeting. What's more, with CPA pricing, you won't ever have to worry about paying for worthless or fraudulent clicks.

Introduction to Machine Learning

by ogrisel (via)
This page has pointers to my draft book on Machine Learning and to its individual chapters. They can be downloaded in Adobe Acrobat format. Although I have tried to eliminate errors, some undoubtedly remain---caveat lector. Certain elements of the typography (overflow into margins, etc.) have not been polished. The notes survey many of the important topics in machine learning circa 1996. My intention was to pursue a middle ground between theory and practice. The notes concentrate on the important ideas in machine learning---it is neither a handbook of practice nor a compendium of theoretical proofs. My goal was to give the reader sufficient preparation to make the extensive literature on machine learning accessible. The draft is just over 200 pages (including front matter).

Ajax and REST, Part 1

by pvergain
The more that server-side Web applications become immersive by following rich-application models and delivering personalized content, the more their architectures violate Representational State Transfer (REST), the Web's architectural style. These violations can decrease application scalability and increase system complexity. By achieving harmony with REST, Ajax architecture lets immersive Web applications eliminate these negative effects and enjoy REST's desirable properties. In just 15 years, the World Wide Web has grown from a researcher's experiment to one of the technological pillars of the modern world. Originally invented to let people easily publish and link to information, the Web has also grown into a viable platform for software applications. But as applications have become more immersive by using rich application models and generating personalized content, their architectures have increasingly violated Representational State Transfer (REST), the Web's architectural style. These violations tend to decrease application scalability and increase system complexity. The emerging Ajax Web client architectural style lets immersive Web applications achieve harmony with the REST architectural style. They can enjoy REST's desirable properties while eliminating the undesirable properties experienced when an application violates REST's principles. This article explains how and why Ajax and REST succeed together for immersive Web applications.

UK Greens Denounce VISTA Submitted by Gregory Heller on Wed, 2007-01-31 12:58. badvista | environment | vista | windows ZD Net ran a story on the UK Green Party position in opposition to Windows Vista. Vista requires more expensive and energy-hungry hardware, passing the cost on to consumers and the environment," Wall said. "This will also further exclude the poor from the latest technology, and impose burdensome costs on small and medium businesses who will be forced to enter another expensive upgrade cycle." Rather than opting for another proprietary OS, the Green Party argues that businesses should look into free software alternatives — such as Linux — as they don't require high-specification hardware. "Free software can run on existing hardware, reduces licensing costs for small businesses and affords important freedoms to consumers. The UK government should capitalise on this opportunity to promote the use of free software in public bodies," added Wall.
