Edgar Hilsenrath (1926) is in Nederland vooral bekend door zijn boeken Nacht en De nazi en de kapper. Vanaf dit voorjaar mag daar een derde titel aan worden toegevoegd: De thuiskomst van Jossel Wassermann. De schrijver brengt een prachtige ode aan de Joodse geschiedenis, wat volgens sommige critici een 'goedmakertje' is voor de cynische, inktzwarte vertelling over de Holocaust in De Nazi en de kapper. Als dat werkelijk zo is, dan is het briljant gelukt.
