Chromium Blog: Launching Sputnik into Orbit

by karlcow

The goal is not that all implementations should pass all tests. V8 set out with that intention and we learned the hard way that sometimes you have to be incompatible with the spec to be compatible with the web. Rather, we want Sputnik to be a tool for identifying differences between implementations.

compatible avec le Web va devenir l'excuse fourre tout de tous les devs… ah non pardon… compatible avec les implémentations pourries.

Introducing Typekit « The Typekit Blog

by Spone & 2 others
We’ve been working with foundries to develop a consistent web-only font linking license. We’ve built a technology platform that lets us to host both free and commercial fonts in a way that is incredibly fast, smoothes out differences in how browsers handle type, and offers the level of protection that type designers need without resorting to annoying and ineffective DRM. As a Typekit user, you’ll have access to our library of high-quality fonts. Just add a line of JavaScript to your markup, tell us what fonts you want to use, and then craft your pages the way you always have. Except now you’ll be able to use real fonts. This really is going to change web design. We’ll be launching this summer with a great collection of beautiful and hardworking typefaces. We’ll offer a free version of the service to get you started, and a low-cost way to grow from there. A truly scalable professional version will follow soon after.

Quantum physics - CreationWiki, the encyclopedia of creation science

by ericpaul (via)
Quantum mechanics [1] deals mainly with the extremely small such as atoms and subatomic particles. While it works on the macroscopic level as well, with few a exceptions; such as superconductorsand superfluids; the results are usually the same as Classical mechanics. It is mainly at the subatomic level that the differences become significant.

Mapping with Isotype « Making Maps: DIY Cartography

by karlcow

isotype had a great look to it. Its context, in Vienna Circle logical positivism, is a bit wonky, and the idea that symbols - if designed carefully enough - could be “universally communicable” across all cultural and social differences, is merely the dream of those born with a peculiar neurology. Nevertheless, the isotype “look” is cool in a retro sort of way, and it has certainly influenced the current spare design ethos in cartography.

Introduction to Information Retrieval

Apart from small differences (mainly concerning copy editing and figures), the online editions should have the same content as the print edition. However, we are planning to fix errata in the online editions every few months or so.

click opera - Song of the fields

by karlcow

If the Guardian's Apocalypse Survival Guide models a return to the land on a dystopian Hobbesian-Hollywood model of selfishness and violence, Hatake No Uta goes completely the other way. Here, survival in the countryside is a matter of semi-religious respect for nature, love of food, poetry, gentleness, wholesomeness, teamwork, beautiful scenery, simple, heart-warming people, something utopian. Now, sure, I wouldn't know country life if it bit me on the nose. But I do recognise cultural difference when I see it.

et surtout

I welcome there being cultural differences in the ways we respond to the current crisis, because differences mean choices.

click opera - Aki Sasamoto, judgmental hopper

by karlcow

Aki says something very interesting in an interview, something about the relationship between being an expatriate and being judgmental. (Aki wants to encourage judgmentalism.) "More and more expatriates," she explains, "tend to be what I call Hoppers. Those who are aware of crossing borders of any kind seem to be more judgmental." But if they're inwardly judgmental, these expats master an outward conformity, a kind of Zelig-like quality: "They are also experts in blurring differences, to mask the consequences of their judgments. As a survival technique, Hoppers fool themselves to ignore gaps, or believe in mingling as the most natural, or even embrace characteristics, while positioning themselves out of such horizontal references... Whatever the resulting attitude is, border crossers face the choice of how to locate themselves in relation to sets of plural realities and values. This is the consequence of hopping-around. Being an expatriate is not the only method of hopping-around. But it seems to be an easy category in these days. This is what I mean by Hoppers."

FXG 1.0 Specification - Flex SDK - Confluence

by karlcow

FXG vs SVG When initial work on an XML-based graphics interchange format began, the natural first thought was to use SVG. However, there are key differences between SVG and Flash Player's graphics capabilities. These include core differences in SVG and Flash's rendering model with regards to filters, transforms and text. Additionally, the interchange format needed to be able to support future Flash Player features, which would not necessarily map to SVG features. As such, the decision was made to go with a new interchange format, FXG, instead of having a non-standard implementation of SVG. FXG does borrow from SVG whenever possible.

Howto: ISP-style Email Server with Debian-Etch and Postfix 2.3

by camel (via)
The configuration described here is not very complicated but still needs to be done carefully. You are expected to have at least basic knowledge of: * MySQL (creating a database, granting access to users, basic SQL queries) * SMTP (what it is and what a basic SMTP dialog looks like) * POP3, IMAP (what they do and what the differences are) * basic Postfix configuration (understand the default settings in your main.cf, have read through the basic configuration document and know that your mail log file is at /var/log/mail.log) * Debian/Linux (general system administration, using a text editor, reading log files)

DOM events - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

by decembre & 1 other
DOM events allow event-driven programming languages like JavaScript, JScript, ECMAScript, VBScript and Java to register various event handlers/listeners on the element nodes inside a DOM tree, e.g. HTML, XHTML, XUL and SVG documents. Historically, like DOM, the event models used by various web browsers had some significant differences. This caused compatibility problems. To combat this, the event model was standardized by the W3C in DOM Level 2.

Message from David Plouffe: Midnight Deadline

by starmuscle
FROM BARACK OBAMA'S WEBSITE AND NEWSLETTER: Campaign Manager David Plouffe just sent this email out... Amanda -- This week, we saw the stark differences between Barack Obama and John McCain on the economy. With Wall Street in crisis and families struggling, Barack offered a solid plan to strengthen the middle class, including tax cuts for nearly all Americans. John McCain continued the same old politics -- lying about Barack's plan and offering more of the same George Bush policies, including more tax breaks for Big Oil and no solutions for working families. It's time for that kind of politics to change. And thanks to supporters like you, our movement has grown by more than 50,000 new donors this week. Now we're within reach of a new goal -- 100,000 new donors by midnight tonight. With just 45 days left before the election, your support will affect crucial decisions about infrastructure in key battleground states. A donation now could have a big impact on voter registration and Get Out The Vote operations -- so please don't wait if you're planning to give. And today, your donation will go twice as far. You can match the gift of a first-time donor and inspire them to own a piece of this campaign. Can you make a donation before midnight tonight and double your impact? Many voters are paying attention for the first time, and 1 in 10 is still undecided. Now is a crucial time to expand our outreach through voter registration and getting as many people as possible out to vote for real change on November 4th. Your donation today is crucial to these efforts across the country -- especially in the key battleground states where the cost to compete is extremely high, and the stakes are even higher. Make a donation of $25 or more right now to help us reach our goal, and provide the resources we need to win: https://donate.barackobama.com/promise Thanks for everything you are doing, David David Plouffe Campaign Manager Obama for America

HTML 5 differences from HTML 4

by parmentierf (via)
HTML 5 defines the fifth major revision of the core language of the World Wide Web, HTML. "HTML 5 differences from HTML 4" describes the differences between HTML 4 and HTML 5 and provides some of the rationale for the changes. This document may not provide accurate information as the HTML 5 specification is still actively in development. When in doubt, always check the HTML 5 specification itself
