Building Support for Use-Based Design into Hardware Products

by karlcow

Increasingly, hardware products (especially consumer electronics) include computers, sensors, and connections to the Internet. These capabilities enable changes in what products “know,” how they are used, and how we develop them. They are becoming more like websites. This simple fact became apparent to me during my work at Dash Navigation as their design director.

WYSI-dangerous: Why WYSIWYG editors are bad for your website - RedCloth: Textile for Ruby

by Spone
Suppose you are fed up with rush-hour traffic and you’re looking for a new way to get to make your daily commute. “I’ve got just the thing,” I say: a personal-sized airplane that will deliver you to work like the Jetsons. Don’t worry, you don’t need to know anything about flying—it’s all automated. No knowledge of flight dynamics, weather, or navigation is required. Just push the right buttons on the dash and the computer will take care of the rest. It’s as easy as driving a car! I hope you’d say, “thanks but no thanks.” Sure, someday that will be a reality, but you realize that right now flying is a much more complex operation than driving. You’re operating in three dimensions instead of two; there are more external factors, like weather and turbulence; you can’t just pull over onto the shoulder. The consequences of making wrong choices are much higher and aviation AI just isn’t sophisticated or trustworthy enough yet.

The Pushbutton Web: Realtime Becomes Real - Anil Dash

by Spone & 1 other
Pushbutton is a name for what I believe will be an upgrade for the web, where any site or application can deliver realtime messages to a web-scale audience, using free and open technologies at low cost and without relying on any single company like Twitter or Facebook. The pieces of this platform have just come together to enable a whole set of new features and applications that would have been nearly impossible for an average web developer to build in the past.

A Red Flag Before The White Flag - Anil Dash

by mbertier (via)
Major labels function with the assumption that 90 percent of artists they sign are going to fail — that should have been a red flag for everybody. I mean that’s a bizarre business model in any arena. But particularly in the cultural arena, the idea that the system through which culture is transmitted is dictated entirely by profit should concern us, because that’s going to narrow the types of culture that are transmitted

Five simple steps to better typography : Journal : Mark Boulton

by ronpish & 14 others
Typography, I find, is still a bit of mystery to a lot of designers. The kind of typography I'm talking about is not your typical "What font should I use" typography but rather your "knowing your hanging punctuation from your em-dash" typography. Call me a little bit purist but this bothers me.

Virtual Seaside - Legend: Sununga

by karlcow

A gracious young woman with a skin like milk with a dash of coffee, green-grey eyes, long full and curly black hair and a body outlined in gracious curves, Marcelina, till then always light of heart, strong and vivaciously cheerful, suddenly seemed to dwindle, eating sparsely, loosing her colour, visibly shy without pep to perform even the simplest housework, remained hours on end in her bed so that one had to incite her to get up.
