Pulse Laser: Here & There influences

by karlcow & 1 other

I’m going to tell you a little bit about the influences on Here & There, a project about representation of urban places, from when it began. It was warmly received when I first presented some corners of it back at Design Engaged in 2004, before Schulze & Webb existed. Here & There is a projection drawing from maps, comics, television, and games.

This particular version is a horizonless projection in Manhattan. The project page is here, where large prints of the uptown and downtown views can be seen and are available to buy.

SVG_roundies: Code-only rounded HTML boxes with SVG

by Spone
SVG_roundies is a port of Drew Diller's excellent DD_roundies library. While DD_roundies uses Microsoft's VML to add rounded corners to boxes and thus only works in Internet Explorer this library is based on the W3C standard SVG. SVG is supported by Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome but not by Internet Explorer. That said in practice you want to use DD_roundies and SVG_roundies together. As SVG_roundies is a port of DD_roundies both libraries provide the very same interface and produce the same results. Only their implementation differs. If you know DD_roundies you can use SVG_roundies in a minute.

This jQuery plugin will easily create beautifully rounded corners. No images or obtrusive markup necessary. Architectural features: Less than 8000 bytes after yui compression. Beautiful and fast anti-aliasing for older or stubborn browsers. Degrades well for browsers with javascript turned off. Native browser corners used on Safari, iPhone, and Firefox 3. Form and anchor buttons are easily styled and rounded. Documentation and test coverage (this file).

Sean Patrick O'Brien : UI & Resolution Independence

by sbrothier
I, like most developers, love shiny new user interfaces. Rounded corners, gradients, drop shadows, custom drawing — all of these things make me smile. What I don’t love, though, is an application that can’t draw with resolution independence and whose Resources folder weighs in at around 100MB. It seems that almost every new app (with a few notable exceptions) handles its custom UI needs by filling the Resources folder with bitmaps of every part of their interface in every possible state. To draw their controls, they tape these bitmaps back together on the screen and call it a day.

CSS Mojo: Adding Polish To Your Pages

by greut

Often times, as web developers, we're asked to add some seemingly simple visual elements to a page, like rounded corners and drop-shadows. There's as many methods of doing these as there are engineers who've banged their collective heads against the issue. In this presentation I'll provide you my markup-lite, non-javascript, mostly semantic methods for adding some fit & finish to your pages. This is by no means the end-all, be-all of rounded corners, and I'd encourage you to do some experimentation to find quicker and more elegant ways of doing some of the following.

some nice tricks, remember, keep it light.
