How to make community members stick at djst’s nest
an interesting conclusion about how to turn new and casual contributors into long-time community members: the key is to distribute ownership.
To wrap up, there were several things that motivated me to stay active in the Mozilla community: * A belief in the mission of the project — to create a web browser that supports and promotes the use of open standards * An interest in the technology — initially with the Gecko logo as my hook * The feeling of belonging in a community of people with similar interests * The desire to give something back to a project that gave (and still gives) me the best browser in the world for free * The experiences gained by managing a website — HTML, CSS, server configurations, and perhaps most importantly, the English language * The recognition and respect from Mozilla project members for my contributions * The pride of being responsible for an important piece of the project

Seb's Open Research: Stocks, Flows, and Upkeep in Social Media

Fascinating and very interesting. I may add another law to your experiment, though it would have to be repeated again to see if it's working.
Law 3: A fractal pattern encourages participation.
A fractal pattern is simple enough that the gratification is direct. One can draw a small shape which already makes sense to the person. (I have participated!). But because of the self-structure of fractal pattern, one is participating to a bigger scheme. Sense of collective achievement with grand goals.
Once the structure is big enough, it becomes visible, organized and then it is an object of power, which in return is its weakness. (Colonial states versus Guerrilla/Terrorism). Wikipedia becomes so big that it fights for copyright or have editors censoring content.
Though I kind of disagree with the conclusion of blogs versus wikis. Blogs are indeed easier to maintain but would it be because wikis are not really object of the commons, aka, there is still someone owning the object, it is a property of someone in the end.
I wonder also if there is a density rule in action. A tribe in a large forest with free will to move as they please versus a piece of land with a lot of people. There is very little destruction when the space is infinite. Take the drawing above and imagine a space which is infinite (possible in digital space), would participant try to destroy the work of others or just go further away to do their own drawing?

By the numbers. And what do they mean for our industry | Monday Note
One big difference: on Wiki the new, corrected edition, is just minutes away. What it means: the idea of full-of-crap wiki systems is dead. Fact is: due to its contributive structure, Wikipedia is a fairly accurate tool.

John Resig - ECMAScript Harmony
Ouf, on a réussi à se débarasser des namespaces et des packages en Javascript : c'est Resig, Hixie, Tantek et Sivonen qui doivent être heureux. Some ECMAScript 4 proposals have been deemed unsound for the Web, and are off the table for good: packages, namespaces and early binding. This conclusion is key to Harmony.

Review: Windows XP - Coding Sanity
La mise à jour qu'il vous fallait pour Vista : XP.To be honest there is only one conclusion to be made; Microsoft have really outdone themselves in delivering a brand new operating system that really excels in all the areas where Vista was sub-optimal. From my testing, discussions with friends and colleagues, and a review of the material out there on the web there seems to be no doubt whatsoever that that upgrade to XP is well worth the money. Microsoft can really pat themselves on the back for a job well done
