Media Matters

by dggit & 11 others (via)
Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. Launched in May 2004, Media Matters for America put in place, for the first time, the means to systematically monitor a cross section of print, broadcast, cable, radio, and Internet media outlets for conservative misinformation — news or commentary that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda — every day, in real time. Using the website www.mediamatters.org as the principal vehicle for disseminating research and information, Media Matters posts rapid-response items as well as longer research and analytic reports documenting conservative misinformation throughout the media. Additionally, Media Matters works daily to notify activists, journalists, pundits, and the general public about instances of misinformation, providing them with the resources to rebut false claims and to take direct action against offending media institutions.

A GALLERY OF 35 ANTI-U.S. CHINESE POLITICAL CARTOONS (circa 1958-1960)

by karlcow

Presenting A GALLERY OF 35 ANTI-U.S. CHINESE POLITICAL CARTOONS (circa 1958-1960) Culled and restored from reviewing hundreds of Eastern newspaper pages and illustrations, this set of 35 images represents what we consider the best late 50s editorial cartoons (Manhua) from China and Indochina. Set during a time of escalating western imperialism, these images react against U.S. military actions in Laos and Vietnam, and represent a unique moment of political commentary. It seems to be a hidden history, too. It's with some pride that we indicate most of these comics have never before been re-published, and even fewer have ever been exhibited or documented for U.S. audiences. Enjoy - Ethan

The Evolution of a specification -- Commentary on Web architecture

by karlcow

By this time the spec was growing to a size where the principle of modularity was seriously flaunted. Any new developments clearly had to be seperate modules. Already style information had been moved out into the Cascading Style Sheets language, the programming interface work was a seperate Document Object Model activity, and guidelines for accessibility were tackled by a seperate group.

Inlassablement, les mêmes erreurs sont répétées, mais peut-être sont elles nécessaires aussi.

American Buddha Online Library

Through its vast collection of screen caps and its growing archive of Little Movies, ABOL transports members from Rob Reiner's Princess Bride to Stuart Urban's Preaching to the Perverted, from Fellini's Satyricon to Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451, from John Waters' Hairspray to Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo. ABOL's collection of screenplays spans from Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, to Carl Sagan's Cosmos series, to Richard Linklater's Waking Life. ABOL's got biographies of artists, authors, and political figures from Lewis Carroll to Joey Ramone, famous works like Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech, complete with current commentary. It's all a little like The Garden of Forking Paths described by Jorge Luis Borges, or the fortress of the Goblin King in Jim Henson's cinematic tour de force, Labyrinth.

The last week before the French presidential election, the Parisian walls have been flooded by resurrected posters from the 74 and 81 elections? Mitterrand back from the dead, and Giscard back in the race! Passers by stop in awe. So do we all. A commentary on the evolution ?or lack thereof- of the political discourse, and of graphic design. The story of two friends who work in stage design for film sets. They come across a first poster, which triggers the idea. Then look for a few more, which they print at their own expense. With a bunch of friends they then take over the public domain of the official campaign. M. Bayrou facing M. Giscard d?Estaing. Or M. Sarkozy facing M. Chirac promising on his poster to be ?a man of his word?. Hum?.
