PhotoSketch

by karlcow

We present a system that composes a realistic picture from a simple freehand sketch annotated with text labels. The composed picture is generated by seamlessly stitching several photographs in agreement with the sketch and text labels; these are found by searching the Internet. Although online image search generates many inappropriate results, our system is able to automatically select suitable photographs to generate a high quality composition, using a filtering scheme to exclude undesirable images. We also provide a novel image blending algorithm to allow seamless image composition. Each blending result is given a numeric score, allowing us to find an optimal combination of discovered images. Experimental results show the method is very successful; we also evaluate our system using the results from two user studies.

AIR-Box for Phpbb 3.0 - Unframe

by mozkart (via)
It nicely resolves the known problem of large posted images breaking your layout resizing them to perfectly fit and shows in a lightbox. It is based on a small script (airbox.js) that also include Slimbox code. (by C. Beyls). It uses [img] bbcode, or a custom [slideshow] bbcode to create slideshows with titled images. A [signature-img] custom bbcode was added in latest release for posting images in signature without lightbox effect. It could be used in combination with [url] for linkink images. It doesn't touch all other images like banner images, etc.. as well signature images. Now attachments images also are resized and show in a lightbox. Users can also post their Flickr images in a nice flash slideshow.

Phototype: image manipulation with Javascript

by redyrod
Lately I had same crazy thoughts on coding a javascript wrapper to manipulate images rendered on the server-side. I decided to do some test which eventually resulted in phototype, a client/server-side library, based on prototype, which supports all kinds of image manipulations. On the serverside the library is powered by combination of PHP/GD that renders the image. With phototype, you are able to rotate, resize, flip and do some other cool effects to images. Let's start a quick tour.

John Mann Photography

by karlcow

Folded in Place furthers the abstraction once offered by landscape photography by removing the place itself and replacing it with a mapped construction. This method leads the viewer to re-imagine the spectacle of the foreign lands and explore the abstraction of place offered by photography. The combination of still-life constructions and the maps’ reference to large and distant lands examines the paradox of known and unknown geographies offered by the photographic image. In this manner, Folded in Place turns the abstract representation of the map back into a physical landscape using photography to look at the map as a geography of its own.

Social Advertising Best Practices

by sbrothier
Social media is big and getting bigger, providing marketers with a combination of reach, relationships, and relevance: * Reach: Social media has overtaken email as the most popular consumer activity, according to a recent Nielsen study. Importantly, consumer growth is coming from an older demographic than social media's historical base; for example, Facebook's strongest growth is coming from 35-49 year-olds, adding twice as many 50-64-year-olds as opposed to those under 18. (Nielsen “Global Faces and Networked Places,” March 9, 2009; MediaPost Blogs Research Brief, “Social Networking Is No Respecter of Age,” March 18, 2009.) * Relationships: Social media's strength is in the personal connections it enables, the peer-to-peer contact, providing reasons for consumers to visit regularly and for extended periods of time. * Relevance: Consumers are extremely engaged with the content and connections that their friends are creating because of its personal relevance.

EventMachine is a library for Ruby, C , and Java programs. It provides event-driven I/O using the Reactor pattern. EventMachine is designed to simultaneously meet two key needs: * Extremely high scalability, performance and stability for the most demanding production environments; and * An API that eliminates the complexities of high-performance threaded network programming, allowing engineers to concentrate on their application logic. This unique combination makes EventMachine a premier choice for designers of critical networked applications, including web servers and proxies, email and IM production systems, authentication/authorization processors, and many more.

Java Profiling « www.jillesvangurp.com

I hope somebody in the TPTP project reads this: your stuff is unusable. If there’s a magic combination of settings that makes this shit work as it should: I missed it, your documentation was useless, the most useful suggestion I found was to not use TPTP. No I don’t want to fiddle with cryptic vm commandline parameters, manually compiling C shit, fiddle with well hidden settings pages, etc. All I wanted was right click, profile.

So am I now a Netbeans user? No way! I can’t stand how tedious it is for coding. Run profiler in Netbeans, go ah, alt tab to eclipse and fix it. Works for me.

Turn Twitter Into Your Personal Assistant

Evaluation of automated subject classification

by karlcow

It was shown that for best results all the elements have to be included in the classification process. The exact way of combining the significance indicators turned out not to be overly important: using the F1 measure, the best combination of significance indicators yielded no more than 3 % higher performance results than the baseline.

by srcmax (via)
On page 30, Elinor Davidov writes about a 40-episode television documentary called Gaza-Sderot, Life in Spite of Everything. Each episode features an interview with an ordinary person on either side of the border, describing daily life. The result is a fascinating combination of drama and banality that makes each episode worth watching. It was co-produced by a staff from Sderot’s Sapir College, Gaza’s Ramattan Studios and the German-French arte.tv (photos and bio blurbs are here).

A growing collection of Basic WordPress Templates, for web designers | SAOB: Senseless Acts of Beauty

by camel (via)
After beginning development of several WordPress websites I found that I was doing the same beginning edits to the wordpress theme structure. So, in order to make my life easy, I proceeded to make some basic editable templates that would suit my needs for multiple websites. Also its very close to Christmas, and this is a time of giving and sharing so I am going to make these theme templates available to anyone. NOTE: These theme templates are only meant to be expanded by a web designer, by no means are these templates a finished design. Now then, there are many basic features of any website that I wanted to make available in each of these theme templates, and over time I will try and make a theme template for each combination. Features to be considered: * Single column layout * Two column layout * Three column layout * Fixed width * Fluid width * Top navigation addition * Search bar in header * Multiple side bars

COCA MARIANI

by sbrothier & 1 other
Today we have a cocaine problem in our country. This problem is no newcomer to the American scene. At the turn of the century, coca was added to many over-the-counter products. It was widely advertised and freely available at the local drug store. Indeed there were groups who warned of its effects and fought against its use but the population at large with easy access and probably little understanding continued using the these tonics and stimulants often to the point of addiction. At least some of the time the public was not aware of the addition of cocaine as one of the ingredients. Of all the coca products none was more flagrant in their advertising or more successful in their sales than Coca Mariani, a dangerous combination of wine and coca extract. The "Popular French Tonic," as it was called was billed as a "Tonic Stimulant" and they claim was used in Hospitals, Public and Religious Institutions.

In 1991 the same lethal combination of risky loans, inflated stocks, and real estate speculation that created this "bubble economy" caused it to burst, plunging the country into its worst recession since World War II.
