I do not use anymore the term privacy for a couple of years. The term is not anymore making sense in the framework we are living now. I prefer to use intimacy (the degree of being close with someone or an environment) and opacity (the thickness between the « me » and the others having access to « me »)

The opacity surrounding the « me » follows these principles:

1. Global : chaque unité d’information est disponible partout sur terre.

2. Instantané : chaque unité d’information est disponible en temps réel.

3. Répliqué : chaque unité d’information est répliquée à l’identique.

4. Permanent : chaque unité d’information est conservée pour une longue période de temps.

Shifting focus

This is the last new post that I'll be making on this blog. I decided a while back to shift the focus of my web activities, and thought it was time to formally close things off here.

Why stop posting here? Mostly just a feeling that I needed to shake things up a bit, to put some serious effort behind a few other ideas that I've wanted to work on for a while. Making a clean break just felt right.

There may still be some activity on this site as I back-fill some old posts from other blogging platforms. My goal is to eventually have this as a (more or less) complete archive of my personal blogging from early 1998 to this year. That's a background project of mine that I plan on allocating a bit more time to in 2010.

A huge thanks to Karl Dubost for hosting this blog for so long. In addition to providing this infrastructure, Karl has supported and inspired me in more ways then he may realize. That you are reading this today is due in no small part to him, so you can thank (or blame!) him.

Ommwriter is a simple text processor that firmly believes in making writing a pleasure once again, revindicating the close relationship between writer and paper. The more intimate the relation, the smoother the flow of inspiration.

Recently InfoQ did a good summary of the debates around the apparent (to some) limitations of REST when it comes to creating good Web services. At issue is that REST APIs seem to expose "CRUDy" services that fly in the face of years of good services design, particularly when they are just read/write interfaces instead of the richer, full REST architecture (more on what this is later.) The discussion was spurred by Arnon Rotem-Gal-Oz's assertion recently that CRUD is bad for REST, which in my opinion is close but not quite right.

After Madlib was forced to cancel a show in Paris late last year, Malcolm Catto came from London to Paris on a moment’s notice with fellow Heliocentrics Jake Ferguson (bass) and Adey Owasu (guitar) of The Heliocentrics, and stole the show in front of 650 rather frenzied Stones Throw fans. This less-than-ten-minute section of their one hour jam session doesn’t come close to capturing the vibe in the cramped quarters of La Bellevilloise that Saturday, 6th of December 2008.

Places & Spaces: Mapping Science is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale. It has two components: the physical part supports the close inspection of high quality reproductions of maps for display at conferences and education centers; the online counterpart provides links to a selected series of maps and their makers along with detailed explanations of how these maps work. The exhibit is a 10-year effort. Each year, 10 new maps are added resulting in 100 maps total in 2014.

While lxml has some excellent benchmarks about the speed of lxml.etree vs. ElementTree, I wanted to run some tests that were as close as possible to my own use case (fairly simple multi-megabyte XML files).
