MP3: Helicentrics Live in Paris | Stones Throw Records
After Madlib was forced to cancel a show in Paris late last year, Malcolm Catto came from London to Paris on a moment’s notice with fellow Heliocentrics Jake Ferguson (bass) and Adey Owasu (guitar) of The Heliocentrics, and stole the show in front of 650 rather frenzied Stones Throw fans. This less-than-ten-minute section of their one hour jam session doesn’t come close to capturing the vibe in the cramped quarters of La Bellevilloise that Saturday, 6th of December 2008.
Places and Spaces :: Mapping Science
Places & Spaces: Mapping Science is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale. It has two components: the physical part supports the close inspection of high quality reproductions of maps for display at conferences and education centers; the online counterpart provides links to a selected series of maps and their makers along with detailed explanations of how these maps work. The exhibit is a 10-year effort. Each year, 10 new maps are added resulting in 100 maps total in 2014.
lxml vs. ElementTree « michael schurter
While lxml has some excellent benchmarks about the speed of lxml.etree vs. ElementTree, I wanted to run some tests that were as close as possible to my own use case (fairly simple multi-megabyte XML files).

What do we sing about, when we sing about the body? The chart below, based on a sample of thousands songs, tells the story. The size of a circle corresponds to how often that part is mentioned in each genre. Click on a genre name to see a close-up that shows exactly what words were used.
Geographic library
GeographicLib is a small set of C classes for performing conversions between geographic, UTM, UPS, MGRS, geocentric, and local cartesian coordinates and for solving geodesic problems. The emphasis is on returning accurate results with errors close to round-off (about 5–15 nm). In addition, various properties of the Transverse Mercator Projection are described and an accurate algorithm for Geodesics on the Ellipsoid is given.

Version is a new online journal for short-form writing and media work. It presents scenes, incidents, encounters, and sensory experiences drawn from everyday life, in which concepts are not only elaborated but enacted. Version works in close-up, cultivating moods, atmospheres, and various forms of bodily apprehension and awareness. It aims for a quality of intimacy, presence, and affective charge: a material openness to unexpected forms of encounter. At the same time, it works laterally, conducting transversal operations across object-boundaries, attuned to the rhythms, flows, and layered ecologies that constitute the phenomenal world.
