Erik Engbrecht's Blog: Pondering Actor Design Trades

by jpcaruana (via)
# Why is the standard Scala actor implementation so complex when others have done it in a such simpler fashion? # Is it better to have one, big actor library that supports a wide variety of use cases, or a bunch of smaller ones targeted at specific niches and programming styles? # If there are to be a bunch, should they just be conceptually similar (e.g. all based on the actor model), or should there be interoperability among them?

Le “Pay what you want” de Brandalley séduit 5 000 nouveaux clients - e-marketing.fr : Ventes privées, E-commerce, Brandalley, Pay what you want

by tisienpo

uxtopia » Social Web Systems Common Model

As I collected more and more, I grouped them and realized that it seemed to be some higher level information architecture patterns common to every site. Some “big blocks” appeared all the time, way obvious as “Profile”, or rather more unpredictable, as “Statistics”.

TechTLV : Can you hear me now? The operator-centric mobile model is over

by oseres
Can you hear me now? The operator-centric mobile model is over Last week, T-Mobile Germany made some waves by banning Skype for the iPhone. Some might read this as a long overdue reassertion of operator power, but I disagree. A few months ago, I learned from a reliable source that a major operator was deliberately not shipping a very popular mobile phone model that they knew their customers wanted because the phone didn’t give them enough control over what the customer does. The phone was too open. This is exactly what Google was talking about back in 2007 when it insisted on openness as a condition to bidding in the FCC’s spectrum auction. Ten years ago, when I covered mobile operators on Wall Street, they used to cite their vast capital expenditure on building on their cellular networks as their core differentiator. This was the reality behind Verizon’s amusing “can you hear me now?” campaign.

Inference Group: Dasher Project: Home

by ronpish & 1 other
Keyboards are inefficient for two reasons: they do not exploit the redundancy in normal ... all » language; and they waste the fine analogue capabilities of the user's motor system (fingers and eyes, for example). I describe a system intended to rectify both these inefficiencies. Dasher is a text-entry system in which a language model plays an integral role, and it's driven by continuous gestures. Users can achieve single-finger writing speeds of 35 words per minute and hands-free writing speeds of 25 words per minute. Dasher is free software, and it works in all languages, and on many platforms. Dasher is part of Debian, and there's even a little java version for your web-browser.

Fast and Furious 4 (2009)

Removing the “the” from its predecessors’ title not once but twice, Fast & Furious’s abbreviated moniker harkens back to the series’s 2001 original while simultaneously expressing a tough curtness that marks it as its own model.
