Last year I wrote about 12 essential web site building blocks — things that you should check when you take on responsibility for a new web site, or even just launch one. Well, this year I've come up with a few more, mostly as a reminder to me for the next site that I'll be running.

Denshi Jisho is an easy-to-use and powerful online Japanese dictionary. It lets you find words, kanji and example sentences by searching in many ways. The dictionaries are also interlinked so that you can check what the kanji in a word mean individually or what context a word can be used in. You can also look up kanji by the parts they contain. The WordPress developers, fortunately, thought of this.  In fact, they store all kinds of stuff that they don’t want the user to see in custom fields – things like the last time the post was edited, who is currently editing it, and a few others.  A quick look at the database, reveals this:Notice a trend?  The mysterious custom field key values are prepended with an underscore.  Give it a try – enter a new custom field from the edit-post page, and enter a name that starts with an underscore – like _thumbnail, or _meta_keywords.  Hit “Add Custom Field”, and it disappears – but if you check the database, its right where it should be. Now get out there and start hiding things from your users!

The URI microformat takes advantage of OpenURL and existing link resolver solution.It defines a convention of plugging URI metadata in HTML page. If it is adopted and widely used,now a microformat-aware application (be a greasemonkey script, or a web service) can grab the identifier and point to your local OpenURL resolver, you immediately get the copy from local library.It is very similar to COINS, but it's much simpler and cleaner, anyone can understand and use it, and its aplication can be beyond traditional research library. e.g. in a public library, you can use amazon as catalog and immediately check if it's available in local collection.------- COinS provides a great number of additional capabilities that URI microformat can't support. Since COinS can't be dismissed for this reason, it doesn't make sense to me to create yet another standard that does the same thing with so little savings.I will grant that the COinS is less intuitive.....

Why the value of still images is collapsing It’s that old supply-and-demand thing. The supply of digital images is way, way up. At the same time, advertising in magazines and newspapers is sinking. If you want to continue earning a living at something you already do, it’s helpful if your trade is difficult to do and expensive to get started. Photography during the film-era was this way. Every time I pushed the shutter-button a couple of bucks flew out the window. Now the cost of getting into the pro photography game is virtually nothing (aside from the cost of the camera, the computer, the software, the training… still a relatively low investment for what you’re able to accomplish). I’m grateful that HDSLR cinematography is expensive and problematic right now. The Trib Is Dead. Long Live The Trib. For several generations, ads in magazines and newspapers were the leading consumer of commercial stills. Sorry Charlie, those days are gone. Today advertisers are increasingly moving their efforts over to web-based campaigns. It’s not personal. It’s demographics. OK. So that means that it is personal. The web, with it’s ability to provide instantaneous feedback to advertisers enables those spending the ad bucks to target their message exactly where it needs to be within minutes. For an ad placed in the wrong magazine, the response time is measured in weeks or months. Print advertising is plummeting (stats here). It’s not the economy, stupid. It’s the medium.
