Cisco internal memo: Chinese censorship and surveillance are "opportunities" - Boing Boing

by mbertier (via)
The document is the first evidence that the networking giant has marketed its routers to China specifically as a tool of repression. It reinforces the double-edged role that Americans' technological ingenuity plays in the rest of the world.

Daily Kos: State of the Nation

by mbertier (via)
One of the most important web sites in recent months has been Wikileaks.org. Wikileaks has upset the Chinese government enough that they are attempting to censor it, as is the Thai military junta. Wikileaks is now under attack from a censorship effort by a California court.

Use a web proxy to stop hackers and websites from stealing your information!

by Unblocku & 1 other
UnblockU is a web-based free anonymous proxy, which allows anyone to surf the internet securely and with total privacy. UnblockU hides your IP address, stopping hackers or website owners from identifying or tracking you. Our free anonymous proxy also prevents monitoring of your network traffic. Proxies are commonly used for several reasons: security, load balancing, data caching in order to reduce bandwidth demands, and censorship or filtering. Filtering proxies insulate you from objectionable elements of Webpages such as cookies, ad banners, dynamic content like Javascript, Java Applets and ActiveX controls. Some anonymous proxies encrypt your Web communications, protecting you from routine monitoring or even dedicated surveillance. Be careful, though, not all proxies are anonymous!

The Freenet Project

by marcjo
Freenet is free software which lets you publish and obtain information on the Internet without fear of censorship. To achieve this freedom, the network is entirely decentralized and publishers and consumers of information are anonymous. Without anonymity there can never be true freedom of speech, and without decentralization the network will be vulnerable to attack.

LiveLeak.com - Redefining the Media

by cyberien & 1 other
Approval Process for Media on LiveLeak.com Once you have uploaded your media to LiveLeak it will be entered into a queue for it to be approved for public viewing by a member of staff. We aim to approve media within 1 hour of upload. What does approval mean? Basically an approved video or image will be shown on the public areas of LiveLeak.com. If media is not approved this DOES NOT mean it has been deleted. Should your media not be approved you will still see it in your media list and it can still be visible within either your group or a group you have submitted it to. You can share the link to the media anywhere on the net and it will be visible. The only place it will not be shown is the ‘browse media' section of the site. Points are not awarded for media which is not approved. Our criteria for approval is really quite simple and this is intended, not as censorship as your media is still available, but rather to root out obvious reposts, flooding for points, and to keep quality high on the public areas. How does the point system work? The point system is designed to motivate our users to deliver positive contributions to LiveLeak. Below you can find the point system details: Info Points Account creation 10 Adding comment 0.04 Adding media item 1.5 Media item becoming featured 75 Below are actions that will lead to no point rewards/point subtraction. If a comment or media item falls under these classifications, all (initial) points related to the media item/comment will be removed. Media item is repost 0 Media item is propaganda 0 Media item is bad (*) -1 Media item is spam -2 Comment is propaganda 0 Comment is bad (*) -0.1 Comment is spam -2
