This plugin allows you to get better control on how your categories are listed. It provides a widget which lets you get more options than the default WordPress category widget (show RSS, hide empty categories, etc.). Furthermore, it allows to hide the children categories and use clickable buttons to expand them. The plugin requires jQuery to be included in your theme. It degrades nicely when javascript is not available to the usual WordPress category list.

AlternativeTo is a new approach to finding good software. Tell us what application you want to replace and we give you suggestions on great alternatives! Instead of listing thousands of more or less crappy applications in a category, we make each application into a category. Think of it like forever evolving blog posts about good alternatives to the software that you're not satisfied with. And the "blog posts" are generated by you through suggestions, comments and votes.
How to Design a Tumblelog Theme for WordPress | Digging into WordPress

Tumblelogs are a great way to streamline mixed-media blogging for different types of content. Commonly used tumblelog topics include “Links”, “Photos”, “Quotes”, “Dialogue”, and “Video”. A good tumblelog presents each these different topics with its own unique format while retaining an overall sense of cohesion throughout the entire design.
A good example of this involves the clever way in which titles for “Link-category” posts link to the showcase URL rather than to the post itself. Other post types may be styled with different colors, meta information, and anything else that seems appropriate. Bottom line is that a well-designed tumblelog makes it easy and fun to showcase and organize a wide variety of different content types all in one place.
Although I prefer to tumble via my Tumblr account, I have always wanted to integrate the process into WordPress by designing a tumblelog-style theme. So in this brisk tutorial, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
The goals of our Tumble Theme are as follows:
Create categories for each content type: Links, Photos, Quotes, Dialogue, and Video
Create unique category, single, and index views for each content type
Make post title links for the Link category point to the showcase URL instead of the post itself
Also provide a link to the post itself (i.e., single view) for posts in the Link category

List Category Posts is a simple WordPress plugin which allows you to list posts from a category into a post/page using the [catlist] shortcode. This shortcode accepts a category name or id, the order in which you want the posts to display, and the number of posts to display. You can use [catlist] as many times as needed with different arguments. Great to use WordPress as a CMS, and create pages with several categories posts. Usage: [catlist argument1=value1 argument2=value2].

3D Dewey Visualization : Reza with Processing

For my final project for MAT 259 (Data Visualization) I wanted to explore the topics of 3D Space, particle systems, OpenGL and java, alpha blending, bill boarding, user interactivity, self-organizing algorithms (Kohonen), and electromagnetic attractions and repulsion. The end result is what you see above and below. I used one year of transaction data (books, DVDs, etc) from the Seattle Public Library to drive the visualization. Each particle/sphere is given properties, such as what category/subcategory it represents and how many items where checked out in that category. This is used to drive the physics system that is used to separate the nodes evenly on the surface of the sphere, moreover I wrote a Kohonen-like to cluster the nodes that are related (same category) together. The visualization is interactive; it allows the user to manipulate how they see the data and the properties of the system.
