Canon EOS 5D Mark II Firmware

Due in early 2010, Canon are set to release a Firmware update for the Canon EOS Mark II which will enable the recording of high definition video at 24 and 25fps after Canon received feedback from both photographers and cinematographers. The update is expected to be released in early 2010.

Why the value of still images is collapsing
It’s that old supply-and-demand thing. The supply of digital images is way, way up. At the same time, advertising in magazines and newspapers is sinking.
If you want to continue earning a living at something you already do, it’s helpful if your trade is difficult to do and expensive to get started. Photography during the film-era was this way. Every time I pushed the shutter-button a couple of bucks flew out the window. Now the cost of getting into the pro photography game is virtually nothing (aside from the cost of the camera, the computer, the software, the training… still a relatively low investment for what you’re able to accomplish). I’m grateful that HDSLR cinematography is expensive and problematic right now.
The Trib Is Dead. Long Live The Trib. For several generations, ads in magazines and newspapers were the leading consumer of commercial stills. Sorry Charlie, those days are gone. Today advertisers are increasingly moving their efforts over to web-based campaigns. It’s not personal. It’s demographics. OK. So that means that it is personal. The web, with it’s ability to provide instantaneous feedback to advertisers enables those spending the ad bucks to target their message exactly where it needs to be within minutes. For an ad placed in the wrong magazine, the response time is measured in weeks or months. Print advertising is plummeting (stats here). It’s not the economy, stupid. It’s the medium. Check out MagazineDeathPool if you’re not already a regular reader. Now is not be the time to launch a career as a magazine shooter.

L’occasion pour Alexandre Brachet d’Upian de revenir sur son engagement de producteur et sur une démarche qui l’a conduit de la Cité des mortes à sa dernière production – actuellement en chantier – Canon City.

Une évolution qu'Alexandre Brachet d'Upian a constatée avec ses propres productions. « En 2002, avec La Cité des mortes, on essayait d'utiliser des contenus différents, vidéos, photos, cartographie. Puis, dans Thanatorama, on a introduit l'interactivité, puisque l'internaute en est le héros... mort ! Enfin, avec Gaza/Sderot, on a intégré graphisme et technologies à l'histoire, puisqu'il s'agissait de décrire les vies parallèles dans ces villes, avec, par exemple, une frontière entre deux écrans sur le site. » Upian développe Canon City, un Web-docu sur les prisons américaines, « où, nouveau pas, on va insérer des contenus envoyés par les internautes car je pense que le Web-docu doit être une oeuvre collective ». Et donc, en progrès.

Magic Lantern is an open platform for developing enhancements to the amazing Canon 5D Mark II full frame digital SLR. This camera is a "game changer" for independent film makers:
* It allows the use of a wide range of lenses (anything that can be adapted to the EF mount).
* The 35mm full-frame sensor is larger than the RED ONE's sensor, Super 35 film. It is approximately the size of VistaVision. This means shallower native depth-of-field than anything on the market, except for the Phantom 65.
* The dynamic range and latitude are close to the capabilities of high-end HD cameras.
* The low-light performance is currently unrivaled, even by the RED ONE.
