by garret & 7 others
We offer hundreds of vintage radio shows for you to listen to online in mp3 format, all for free. Before the days of video games, shopping malls, MTV, and the Internet, families used to sit in their living room each night to listen to radio shows such as Superman, Groucho Marx, The Avenger, Gunsmoke, Sherlock Homes, and many others. When TV become popular in the 1950's, most of these shows went off the air, but they now live on at websites such as this one and on weekly nostalgia radio broadcasts worldwide.

Articles de Engineering @ Facebook | Facebook

by karlcow

The Photos application is one of Facebook’s most popular features. Up to date, users have uploaded over 15 billion photos which makes Facebook the biggest photo sharing website. For each uploaded photo, Facebook generates and stores four images of different sizes, which translates to a total of 60 billion images and 1.5PB of storage. The current growth rate is 220 million new photos per week, which translates to 25TB of additional storage consumed weekly. At the peak there are 550,000 images served per second. These numbers pose a significant challenge for the Facebook photo storage infrastructure.

zastica - IconBuffet is Dead ?

by sbrothier
For some time, the once-popular social web site dedicated to collecting and sharing web icons has been languishing in a state of limbo. In it’s heyday, it boasted a huge amount of interest, and more activity than it’s servers could handle. New sets of icons to trade and download were released weekly, at the very least. It offered increased service for a monthly fee, giving users 3 times the in-game currency to buy new icon sets than free users received. Sometimes, even that wasn’t enough to keep up with the flood of icons.

TWITTER : Recommandation pour l'utiliser comme Outil de communication pour les Musées (An Open Letter to Museums on Twitter)

by decembre
1. Don't use Twitter to spam me about visiting. 2. It's okay if you start by just following. 3. Once you decide to tweet, make it interesting. 4. Tell me something I can't find on your homepage. 5. Tell me who you are. 6. Respond to people 7. Give me content worthy of your institution. Twitter "radio stations" : * Funny things said by visitors. * Guard feed! (Thanks for the idea, Shelley.) * Institutional superstitions or weird things about the building. * The imagined experiences of a famous artifact, heavily loved interactive, or other institutional mascot (see this Twitter feed, which I doubt is written by AMNH staff). * Haiku about museum work. * A daily or weekly feature on a specific topic. * Jokes, recipes, quotes, and interesting facts. Do you know why there are naked ladies on the front of ships? * Weird and surprising behind-the-scenes victories and challenges. What's it like to prep an exhibition on poop? * Topical, provocative questions.

HOMOSEXUALITY: LEGITIMATE ALTERNATE DEATHSTYLE (1986)

by mbertier (via)
Reading these pages is like jumping into a bizarro world of bent pent-up pop-culture where the wrong is right, the shirt and haircut doesn't match, and most of the food shopping is done in bulk through QVC. Full of religious radio, weekly gun rallies, dittoheads, the 700 club, casserole potlucks ... There are tops and bottoms to this discussion, clearly, and this comic was intended for the humans over the homos. We can't even type the title of what we're about to present without laughing a bit. But that's what Hafer fans lovingly refer to as "that ol' dick magic". Dick Hafer really was that sort of an asshole. Anyway...
