Compatibility Master Table

by srcmax
This is a general overview table; a Yes here does not mean a browser supports every tiny detail of the specification correctly. Instead, it means that it supports a workable subset of the specification. In IE’s case this may mean that it supports its proprietary methods and properties, and that those properties are generally equivalent to the W3C spec.

Make: Online : Getting free wireless in airports and hotels

by Fulcanelli (via)
One of the frustrating things about traveling is the obligatory pay-wireless that so many hotels and airports provide. If you check your mail at the airport and again at the hotel, it's pretty easy to run up charges equivalent to a month's worth of broadband, not to mention that you have to give your credit card to an unknown access provider affiliate.

People's Music Store: Build Your Own Record Shop

by garret (via)
"People's Music Store is a newly launched DIY online music store. It was created by the founder of MP3 reseller Bleep.com, Ged Day. People's Music Store styles itself as "the first music store entirely powered by music fans." Basically the service allows you to set up your own custom-designed record store, with music chosen from a catalogue of indie record labels (so far no major record label music). The idea is that you earn points, equivalent to 10% of the price of the single, EP or album that you sell. These points can only be used to buy other music items on the People's Music Store site. There are more than 650 stores currently, with over 250,000 songs in the catalogue - most appear to be available at $0.99 per song or $8.99 per album. The site claims to be "working with" 4,500 labels, including 4AD, XL, Rough Trade, Matador, Dominio, and Ged Day's own Warp. Other than the lack of major label music, there is another minor annoyance for those of us who don't live in the U.S. - international users will frequently run into a "we're sorry, but this release is not available in your country" message. However on the plus side, all the music available for download is DRM-free and at high quality 320Kbps." [reawriteweb]

Brave New World - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

by karlcow

Social critic Neil Postman contrasts the worlds of 1984 and Brave New World in the foreword of his 1985 book Amusing Ourselves to Death. He writes:

What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us.

Implementing AtomPub

by karlcow

AtomPub clients expect to use HTTP authentication to gain access to the server, so that's what you have to provide. Unlike a human user on a web browser, where you might implement a floating, “web 2.0” style login box (or its accessible equivalent), for a machine operating over a wire protocol, you have to reply with and respond to the proper HTTP authentication challenges. ¶

Javascript equivalent for PHP's utf8_decode

by camel
This article is part of the 'Porting PHP to Javascript' Project, which aims to decrease the gap between developing for PHP & Javascript. A lot of people are familiar with PHP's functions, and though Javascript functions are often quite similar, some functions may be missing or addressed differently. The Javascript implementations should be as compliant with the PHP versions as possible, a good indication is that the PHP function manual could also apply to the Javascript version. Porting crucial PHP functions to Javascript can be fun & useful. Currently some PHP functions have been added, but readers are encouraged to contribute and improve functions by adding comments. Eventually the goal is to save all the functions in one php.js file and make it publicly available for your coding pleasure.
