Ubiquitous Angels; ambient sensor networks to crowd source crisis response and community awareness

by karlcow

Criticism • Side effects often dominate over intended consequences of any project or endeavor. • Abstract views may make us callous or may badly reflect ground truth. • Ignorance is bliss. The world is filled with sob stories. Best to not dwell? • Such services may be used solely for the most banal aspirations and goals. • Struggle may be important - making things too easy may harm fitness and lower diversity of skills and abilities over long term. • What about poor people who are outside of any implied technological social network? • Why not just help people around you? • Any technology should go hand in hand with day to day personal practice that is unmediated? • Feedback loops may be created that accelerate and disrupt society. • Virtual and visual only for curators; not tactile; uses only one sense. A concern?

CodeProject: Designing And Implementing A Neural Network Library For Handwriting Detection, Image Analysis etc.- The BrainNet Library - Full Code, Simplified Theory, Full Illustration, And Examples. Free source code and programming help

by jpcaruana (via)
This article will explain the actual concepts of Backward Propagation Neural Networks - in such a way that even a person with zero knowledge in neural networks can understand the required theory and concepts very easily. The related project demonstrates the designing and implementation of a fully working 'BackProp' Neural Network library, i.e, the Brain Net library as I call it. You can find the theory, illustration and concepts here - along with the explanation of the neural network library project - in this article. Also, find the full source code of the library and related demo projects (a simple pattern detector, a hand writing detection pad, an xml based neural network processing language etc) in the associated zip file.

Thoughts on Opera Unite | FactoryCity

by sbrothier & 2 others
I met today’s news about Opera’s new initiative — called Unite — with a mix of shock and awe. On the one hand, I was sickened by the lack of analysis from the echolalic blogger news corps. It appeared that Opera PR had successfully reached out to all of them, shoved a news release down their throats and waited to give them the go-ahead to regurgitate it on their blogs, using the same screenshots, same content, and differing only in the pithiness of their post titles.

The Art (and Random Adventures) of Eric Tan

by everyueveryme & 1 other
Designer/Doodler. Grew up in the sleepy town of San Diego. Suffers from narcolepsy. When not working or sleeping...or sleeping at work, I usually have a skateboard, a snowboard, or a burrito in hand.

6 Reasons Why Twitter is the Future of Search - Google Beware

by fredgood
sers have the option of getting answers from their network of people who they actually trust. On the other hand, Google gives you a page of links compiled by their quality algorithm. Sure, Google returns pretty good search results most of the time, but they’re impersonal and sometimes irrelevant to what you really want. Getting in touch with your network via Twitter is the best way to get reliable information you can trust. For example, if you had a question about life in the NBA, would you rather ask Shaquille O’Neal on Twitter or type a question in Google?

The Project Plan, The Bible | Product Design and Development

by karlcow

Project plans and process ignorance

Project managers live and die by the project plan. It’s their bible. We know it like the back of our hand and we assume that everyone on the team does too, but to my surprise this is rarely the case.

Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge can reduce the effectiveness of the team, negatively impacting cost, time and performance. This article will explore the problem and suggest ways to remedy it.

Torgeir Husevaag - map

by karlcow

Maps, especially old hand-drawn ones, are beautiful and intricate visual objects. They are also documents where information has been selected, organized, and often manipulated to fit different purposes. Through history mapmakers have put their parons interests at the centre, and chosen map-projections that stretches or reduces continents the way they saw most beneficent. Today this is well known, and my map project follow the same pattern, - being subjective and egocentric to the extreme. They are also documentation of various personal investigations, - explorations that creates narratives related to the short stories of Borges and Calvino.

For the moment I´m not working with maps, but I´m still mapping.

Linux-Unix Cheat Sheets - The Ultimate Collection

by delavigne & 1 other
This is a compilation of approx 70 cheat sheets for Linux users. There are a grip load of commands that Linux users have at hand which can seem very daunting to a novice. This collection will make Linux just a little less of a headache to learn.

Approach - Thinking - IDEO

by karlcow

Because design is messy and non-linear, each project we do is bespoke. We customize it for the challenge at hand. The scoping of the project plan is when our approach starts to take shape, and where our partnership with you begins.

Spike

by karlcow
spike is a quarterly magazine for contemporary art that was founded by the artist Rita Vitorelli in 2004, published in Vienna. The magazine offers new, illuminating, and unconventional perspectives on art and contemporary trends. The inclusion of many voices from the art world, subjective points of view and a first hand directness grant a new proximity to reality.

I Spose I’ll Just Say It: You Should Learn MVC

by ms_michel

The Great Lie

WebForms is a lie. It’s abstraction wrapped in deception covered in lie sauce presented on a plate full of diversion and sleight of hand. Nothing you do with Webforms has anything to do with the web – you let it do the work for you.

JPT • COVERS

by sbrothier
This is an attempt to create cover art for every great magazine I own (+ a few I wish I owned). It's never a straight crib, the source magazines are a jumping-off point for my imagination... ... and covering covers is a theme that lets me combine some of my favourite things; portraiture, typography, pencils and graphic design. The occasional photos illustrate my current process: I draw A3 & A4 sections which I sometimes collage or retouch in Photoshop. The COVERS typeface is Akka (a nod to Carlo Scarpa) redrawn by hand, of course.

Dragon Ball Kai

by marco

Distracted? Self Control Now Available as an OS X App | Epicenter from Wired.com

by sbrothier
A colleague once defined "work" as "that which you accomplish while not distracted by the internet," and he was onto something. Anyone who works on a computer understands how easily personal communication (e-mail, instant messaging, social networks) can distract from the task at hand.
