16. Why does Firefox load my SWF twice?

Firefox 3 has a known issue that sometimes causes a swf to be 'double initialized'. The problem appears to be fixed in their codebase, but has not been released yet. See the following bugs for more details: bug 438830 and bug 445599.

Or, if you have "Disable cache" selected in your Firefox Web Developer Toolbar extension a double load will occur.

keybr.com - take typing speed test and practice typing online

by oseres & 3 others
Have you ever wished that you had a way to practice typing so that you could become a more efficient and capable keyboard jockey? Typing at the “speed of thought,” perhaps? Enter Keybr.com — the flash–based typing instructor you’ve been waiting for! Keybr.com is very straightforward. You can choose from three basic lessons that start with a certain number of keys on the keyboard, and then, as you progress through the lessons, more keys are introduced to the mix to make things a little tougher. As an added bonus, our software keeps track of all your mistakes and your words–per–minute (wpm) — and even creates graphs of your day–by–day performance. But, things get even better! Once you have determined that the lessons you have completed have reached their maximum result, get ready to play with custom mode, where you can edit and personalize the text that you wish to practice! Very bare–bones, but oh, so functional. Finally, to up the entertainment level of your typing lessons, you can import content from a web site or blog into Keybr.com to type it out. But why even bother to learn touch typing? The answer is simple — it is healthier for you, faster and more accurate. Blogging, writing long documents and e–mails, instant messaging with your friends, and even coding sophisticated computer programs will become much easier and more enjoyable once you eliminate distraction of hunt–and–peck typing. If you are curious about how touch typing appears to onlookers, please watch a couple of short YouTube videos demonstrating really high typing speed:

Art Fag City » IMG MGMT: The Nine Eyes of Google Street View

by karlcow

his essay illustrates how my Street View collections reflect the excitement of exploring this new, virtual world. The world captured by Google appears to be more truthful and more transparent because of the weight accorded to external reality, the perception of a neutral, unbiased recording, and even the vastness of the project. At the same time, I acknowledge that this way of photographing creates a cultural text like any other, a structured and structuring space whose codes and meaning the artist and the curator of the images can assist in constructing or deciphering.

The HTML5 Equilibrium

by marco
The result is that HTML5 appears to be a self-contradictory mess. But it's hard to imagine a successful web technology that isn't a mess. That's because the web itself is a mess.

Pushing MRD out from under the geek rock « electronic museum

by karlcow

MRD (That’s Machine Readable Data – I couldn’t seem to find a better term..) is probably about as important as it gets. It underpins an entire approach to content which is flexible, powerful and open. It embodies notions of freely moving data, it encourages innovation and visualisation. It is also not nearly as hard as it appears – or doesn’t have to be.

MaDdoG Software | PlacesBar Editor

by Spone & 1 other
PlacesBarEditor is a free utility for Windows 2000 and Windows ME that allows you to customize the "PlacesBar" that appears on the left side of the Open and Save dialogs in most applications. The PlacesBar is a set of shortcuts to commonly-used folders, but wouldn't it be more useful if you could determine what "commonly used" means for yourself, instead of letting Microsoft define it for you? That's where PlacesBarEditor comes in.

Netvibes Appears to Be Dying - ReadWriteWeb

Popular start-page service Netvibes may be in its final days as a viable product. The service has been suffering frequent, extended downtime, hasn't been fully functioning even when up and can't possibly be making as much money as its backers hoped it would.

Shut your Mac down, don’t get up... I bought an Apple Mac Mini to use as a media center. Apple ships OS X Leopard with Front Row, which is great, except I found an important feature lacking: you need a keyboard to shut your Apple down. Not what you want in a chique remote controlled home cinema setting. I made a Shut Down plug-in for Front Row. It appears there are a lot of people that don’t want to get up to switch off their Mac up after watching a movie!

Flickr: Discussing Real-time Flickr analytics of any photo page in Flickr Hacks with whos.amung.us/

by decembre
By inserting the non-JS version of the widget into the comment area of your photo page, you can basically be monitoring the live visitor traffic on that photo. The tool's ability to display geographical data about the visitors makes it a great supplement to the Flickr Stats which does not disclose visitors' location. I have only placed this on my top-viewed assets since today so I can't really comment any further about its effectiveness - though I must say that I do find it interesting that while my main sites and blogs receive mostly U.S. traffic, it appears that visitors to my media assets on Flickr are fairly diverse. If that's really the case (and only time will time after I have collected enough data), it will provide a really strong case for marketing... which in turn will explain why what all those yahoo ad servers requests may really be about... (of course that's just a hunch) - but in any case, it's an interesting site to check out.

Wait till I come! » Blog Archive » Video captioning made easy with the YouTube JavaScript API

by sbrothier (via)
One thing that has been annoying me for ages is that no video player on the web allows you to write comments for a specific time in the video that get displayed as plain text. Viddler allows you to comment at a certain time and it appears in the video, but the benefits of time based captioning both in terms of accessibility and SEO didn’t quite transpire to any video site maintainers yet. Edit: Darn, I hadn’t looked at Viddler for a long time, it actually does this now, well done!

How To Optimize Your Site With HTTP Caching | BetterExplained

by holyver & 1 other
Caching is a great example of the ubiquitous time-space tradeoff in programming. You can save time by using space to store results. In the case of websites, the browser can save a copy of images, stylesheets, javascript or the entire page. The next time the user needs that resource (such as a script or logo that appears on every page), the browser doesn’t have to download it again. Fewer downloads means a faster, happier site.
