Help Flood Victims in the Philippines

by alamat (via)
This will be short. I’m sending out an appeal to the world. As I write this article, thousands of people are still trapped in the floodwaters of typhoon Ondoy—or in relocation sites that have no food and drinking water. (Just in case you don’t know anything about what’s happening in Metro Manila and Rizal

click opera - I wish I hadn't shaved off my hair!

by karlcow

21. I also notice that the times I've had a shaved head tend to correspond to times I've had a surprising amount of success with women. Even if I thought I looked bad, something seemed to appeal. I think one reason might be that when you have a shaved head you look like a huge, erect, walking penis. That works, you know, subliminally on women. When they look at you, something deep in their subconscious says "Penis!"

what a dick! (trop facile)

Paul Ramsey: OpenStreetMap moves to PostgreSQL

by karlcow

The speedy success of the hardware appeal (target reached in less than three days) was pretty impressive, but what really perked my (PostgreSQL fanboi) ears up was the news that the new hardware was going to run PostgreSQL, instead of the MySQL database OSM has used from the start. As of April 19, OSM is running their new API live on PostgreSQL.

Aesthetics of Play: Online Proceedings

by sbrothier
In response to critics of supernatural horror tales, H.P. Lovecraft commenced his now famous work of literature with this incisive reply: The appeal of the spectrally macabre is generally narrow because it demands from the reader a certain degree of imagination and a capacity for detachment from everyday life. Relatively few are free enough from the spell of the daily routine to respond to tappings from outside, and tales of ordinary feelings and events, or of common sentimental distortions of such feelings and events, will always take first place in the taste of the majority... ([1927] 1973 : 12). Reformulated nowadays, Lovecraft might as easily have suggested that the appeal of the spectrally macabre demands that one plays its game. Because, while it is true that all genres are characterized by a set of pre-established conventions that generate a certain number of more or less precise expectations stimulating a certain reflexive game of guesswork and recognition, the horror genre might be the one that has been most often compared to a game.

Grails - The search is over.

There has never really much debate about whether Service Oriented Architecture is a good idea or not. Based on principles such as loose coupling, encapsulation, location transparency, and the separation of infrastructure and applications, it has always had broad appeal

The Japan Times Online Articles

by karlcow

HARUKI MURAKAMI: The Simulacrum in Contemporary Japanese Culture, by Michael R. Seats, 2006, 384 pp., $70 (cloth) Haruki Murakami's novels have much in common with potato chips. Both are often addictive and both are often ultimately unsatisfying. Yet one can't help but buy another bag of chips at the supermarket and another Murakami novel at the bookstore. Such is his appeal.

Research Project Calculator

by knann (via)
The Research Project Calculator which is aimed at a K–12 audience. The old version was aimed squarely at traditional research paper projects. The new one has broader appeal and includes information about essay, presentation, or video projects Once the project type is selected, students can enter their email address for automated reminders and the project due date. The calculator prints out a five-step research guide and deadlines for each step to discourage procrastination. The new site has a lot more supporting documentation than the original, and a teacher guide is on the way. This would be a great site to link to from a media center or other school web page.

StoryBridge.tv

by dggit
Via journalism.co.uk, we come across a local TV anchor and photog who chuck the fame and fortune, the exposure and paycheck of jobs on the local TV news to create their own local online shows for Madison, WI, at StoryBridge.tv. They want to do stories that “validate” — their word — people doing good things locally. Based on their beta stories, I wish they also chuck more of their local-TV ways and make shows that are a little rougher, less polished, more authentic. I also hope they put their videos up on YouTube et al and make them embeddable so they can be part of the local conversation. And I hope they’ll also do stories that are useful, not just TV-heartwarming. Now having given those caveats, I’m enthusiastic about what they’re doing. They will surely avoid the fires and press releases and weather mania that inhabit most local TV nows — because they can’t afford it. And so they will go out and do real stories, showing their old newsroom what’s possible. There’s no reason any individual or team in any town couldn’t do this; the tools and distribution are all there. They’re also doing innovative things, starting, for example, a nonprofit arm that will allow locals to support series that may not have commercial appeal.
