Often when reading a typical article or interview we are left unmoved, unenlightened and uninspired. Formulaic and sterile conversations prevent responses or expression from going beyond surface level. Wading through the mundane to find the truly good stuff in life can be a struggle, but it is far worse to not even bother trying. A ‘selector’ is one that singles out something in particular. In the case of this bi-annual publication, we focus on the idea of truth with the aim of portraying the honesty and sincerity of both the individuals and places we choose to examine. We are coming together to celebrate those who have gone above and beyond what’s expected – individuals who have dedicated their lives to something great. Selector’s objective is to present open dialogues with substance, to take a momentary break from busy lives to share some of the sights and sounds encountered by those pursuing the uncommon

At the Independent Magazine Advisory Group’s sixth annual meeting in Boulder, Colorado this week, Bob Sacks, president of Precision Media Group, offered six key properties for what a magazine is. Tellingly, his were platform-neutral: 1.    It’s metered. It’s paginated. It has a beginning, middle and end. 2.    It’s edited, or curated. 3.    It’s designed. 4.    It’s date-stamped. 5.    It’s permanent. Once created, it can’t be changed. 6.    It’s periodic. It has a calendar or rhythm. It has a series of issues.

Chatterbots, Tinymuds, and the Turing Test

by parmentierf
The Turing Test was proposed by Alan Turing in 1950; he called it the Imitation Game. In 1991 Hugh Loebner started the Loebner Prize competition, offering a $100,000 prize to the author of the first computer program to pass an unrestricted Turing test. Annual competitions are held each year with smaller prizes for the best program on a restricted Turing test. This paper describes the development of one such Turing System, including the technical design of the program and its performance on the first three Loebner Prize competitions. We also discuss the program's four year development effort, which has depended heavily on constant interaction with people on the Internet via Tinymuds (multiuser network communication servers that are a cross between role-playing games and computer forums like CompuServe). Finally, we discuss the design of the Loebner competition itself, and address its usefulness in furthering the development of Artificial Intelligence.
