Japanese Dolls on the Western Toyshelf

by karlcow

Dolls from Japan were very popular in America and Europe through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On these pages, I have collected illustrations and references that suggest the place of the Japanese doll in the minds of American and European children, and of the adults who bought them toys and moralized those toys.

LOVELAND - ABOUT

by 4004
Based in Detroit, Michigan, LOVELAND is all about creative new concepts in micro payments for micro ownership and use of land. It is building frameworks for many people to invest and participate in the creation of something where nothing was before, and to interact with places both in person and online in various unique ways. Starting with the smallest unit of American measurement, the humble inch, the first LOVELAND "colony" is a 10,000 square inch grid called Plymouth. People are invited to purchase these inches for a dollar a piece. When Plymouth is full it will move outdoors from its temporary home in Detroit's Russell Industrial Center and the next colony (or colonies) will appear.

The Oxford Project

by rax262 (via)
In the storytelling tradition of Studs Terkel and the photographic spirit of Mike Disfarmer, The Oxford Project tells the extraordinary true tale of a seemingly ordinary Midwestern town through the pictures and words of its residents. Equal parts art, American history, cultural anthropology, and human narrative—The Oxford Project is at once personal and universal, surprising and predictable, simple and profound.

Placing Memory: Observatory: Design Observer

by karlcow

Today the forced relocation of 120,000 innocent U.S. citizens to camps in seven states of the American West has been condemned as immoral and unconstitutional. In 1988 the federal government paid restitution to survivors and issued an apology, while official reports acknowledged that the policy arose from racism and irrational fear.

Physics and Pixie Dust » American Scientist

by karlcow

The excesses of the Schön case—like the fantastic forgeries of previous eras—throw light onto habits and practices that have come to seem normal. The relentless rat race to produce new results quickly in order to secure the next round of funding or promotion is not without consequences.

The full extent of executive pay

by karlcow

The pay gap between executives and the average American worker has always been pretty big, and seems to have increased as the world's economy grows. But with the recent recession bringing the most desperate financial conditions the world has seen since the Great Depression, one could be excused for expecting this gap to be reduced.

No country has perfect system, but there are lessons to learn

by medtours06
Tackling the high cost of health care is politically bruising and difficult work around the world. Among developed countries, only the Norwegians rival our level of spending. The French wrestle with rising costs every year. The Canadians are searching for a better model, and have had their eyes on France. But for all their troubles, the French and the Canadians - two bogeymen in the American reform debate - spend much less and live longer than we Americans.

Against Transparency

by karlcow

Likewise with transparency. There is no questioning the good that transparency creates in a wide range of contexts, government especially. But we should also recognize that the collateral consequence of that good need not itself be good. And if that collateral bad is busy certifying to the American public what it thinks it already knows, we should think carefully about how to avoid it.

Jodorowsky's Dune: Designed by Giger and Moebius, scored by Pink Floyd, scenery chewed by fat Orson Welles | Boing Boing Gadgets

by Neewok

Of course I'm flipping out in our Editor's chat about the fact that Alejandro "The Holy Mountain" Jodorowsky collaborated with Jean "Mœbius" Giraud, H.R. Giger, and Pink Floyd to adapt Frank Herbert's Dune into a film in 1975 — a project that never took off due to funding issues — when Rob, cultured beyond American measure, casually coughs that me not knowing about it is impossible, simply because it is too awesome not to be known.

Yet, I did not know!

The Doers Club: Change Observer: Design Observer
