Stuck in the middle : Weblog

5. Provider<Foo>: you say that the injector must throw an exception at run time, but Guice actually fails at initialization time (or build time if you validate your modules there). Nothing in the spec prevents you from injecting additional types like ServiceReference and Iterable; Guice actually supports injecting collections of bindings via multibindings as an optional feature.

The Photos application is one of Facebook’s most popular features. Up to date, users have uploaded over 15 billion photos which makes Facebook the biggest photo sharing website. For each uploaded photo, Facebook generates and stores four images of different sizes, which translates to a total of 60 billion images and 1.5PB of storage. The current growth rate is 220 million new photos per week, which translates to 25TB of additional storage consumed weekly. At the peak there are 550,000 images served per second. These numbers pose a significant challenge for the Facebook photo storage infrastructure.

And as for “free”, I think we’re going to have a few rounds of root beers over whether a place, like Google, that browses through your e-mail via robots and uses it to generate statistically relevant advertisements on your page, or places like Flickr that do in fact have advertisements for seeing your content and charge you on top of that for additional features, or places like Ustream that have profit-sharing and used to do indirect advertisement but now overlay ads on your content, are “free”. Some people confuse “no money down” with free and that’s why they’re getting fucking kicked out of their houses, finding themselves at the mercy and procedures of actual eviction law.

Peu de choses sont réellement gratuites, et même quand elles semblent l'être, votre propriété est en réalité très limitée.

reallysimplehistory - Google Code

by holyver & 1 other (via)
Really Simple History is a lightweight JavaScript library for the management of bookmarking and browser history in Ajax/DHTML applications. RSH serializes application data in an internal JavaScript cache so that bookmarks and the back button can be used to return your application to an earlier state. Originally developed by Brad Neuberg in 2005, RSH has won a large user base for its simplicity, ease of use and lack of dependency on any specific Ajax framework. It's written in plain old JavaScript and can be included on any site according to the terms of its BSD license. In September 2007, Brian Dillard of Pathfinder Development came on board as maintainer and ongoing code steward for the project. A new version, with support for additional modern browsers (IE7, Safari, Opera), was released as RSH 0.6 on December 3, 2007.

Advogato: Blurring of MVC lines: Programming the Web Browser.

by ERSWeb (via)
This article outlines how the MVC concept is made incredibly awkward by the gradual but necessary introduction of Javascript and AJAX. A solution is found in the form of Javascript Compiler Technology such as GWT or Pyjamas (PyPy's JS backend or Rb2Js could be used, with some additional work). The article outlines how and why the traditional MVC patterns are fragmented by Javascript and AJAX, advocating that if a site is programmed purely in a high-level language that is then compiled to Javascript for the Web Browser sections, the same high-level source code can be executed either client-side on the browser, or server-side, or even both, depending on the requirements. The implications of this approach are discussed in depth.
