Socio-Technical Assemblages « Service Design Research

by karlcow

There’s a strong tendency to see services as ‘things’: we often hear that services are ‘more complex’ than products. All kinds of means to grasp the complexity of an airline or a hospital can be applied – cybernetics, actor-network theory, etc. But the interaction between a prostitute and his or her john or jane is complex in a way I don’t think these approaches capture.

Erik Engbrecht's Blog: Pondering Actor Design Trades

by jpcaruana (via)
# Why is the standard Scala actor implementation so complex when others have done it in a such simpler fashion? # Is it better to have one, big actor library that supports a wide variety of use cases, or a bunch of smaller ones targeted at specific niches and programming styles? # If there are to be a bunch, should they just be conceptually similar (e.g. all based on the actor model), or should there be interoperability among them?

Paul Schrader’s MISHIMA at Film Forum in New York City

by karlcow

(1985) The life of the controversial Japanese novelist — both for his Nobel-worthy art and for his über-flamboyant life — in four symbolic Acts (Beauty, Art, Action, Harmony of Pen and Sword) and on three planes: bw flashbacks to his previous life, seeing the lonely, sickly boy before he became the world-famous bodybuilder/writer/actor; highly colored and stylized dramatizations of sequences from his books The Temple of the Golden Pavilion (previously filmed as Ichikawa’s Conflagration), Kyoko’s House, and Runaway Horses; and a docudramatic treatment of the last day of his life, leading up to his own theatrically-staged seppuku.

Spock traque votre profil sur le Web - Abondance : Référencement et moteurs de recherche

by decembre

Writing concurrent systems is one of the most difficult problems facing programmers today. Working with threads is difficult, and asynchronous approaches are confusing and difficult to work with.

Erlang-like for Ruby, nice.

PARLEY

by pvergain
PARLEY is an API for writing Python programs that implement the Actor model of distributed systems, in which lightweight concurrent processes communicate through asynchronous message-passing. Actor systems typically are easier to write and debug than traditional concurrent programs that use locks and shared memory. PARLEY can run using either traditional native threads, greenlets (lightweight threads), or Stackless Python's tasklets. A program written using PARLEY can choose between these models by changing a single line of code. Usage Messages in PARLEY can be arbitrary objects, but the standard message format is a 4-tuple: (tag, sender, args, kwargs). A typical way to handle such a message is to look up a function based on the tag; pass args and kwargs as parameters to the function (args being position parameters, and kwargs being keyword parameters); and to send the return value of the function as a message to the original sender. You can check out the latest version from Subversion using the following command: svn co http://artdent.homelinux.net/parley/trunk
