SML Wiki: Interestingness(note: work in progress)

by decembre
Interestingness is a media (images, videos, etc) ranking algorithm to provide as an additional metric for search results. The algorithm is based upon an algorithm created by the Flickr team, and is further enhanced by metadata knowledge resulted from the Del.icio.us development. The algorithm was first unveiled publicly on Flickr on 2005-08-01.1 SML.SML: Interestingness = f(views, faves, comments, tags, time, user, network relationships); The ranking is based on one or more of the following factors: * the quantity of user-entered metadata2 (i.e. tags) * the number of users who have assigned metadata3 * the number of favorites assigned to the photo4 * relationship between the person who uploaded the photo and the people who are commenting5 * access patterns related to the media object6 (i.e. where the clickthroughs are coming from; who comments on it and when)7 * a lapse of time related to the media object8 (i.e. velocity of metadata acquisition)

globalization and urbanization

by sadashivan
Globalization opened enormous scope of opportunities and gateway to trade exchanges world over. Especially Asian and developing countries were in advantage to promote their sales and services to developed countries. Because of globalization developing countries easily could access to world market. Waving or minimal tariffs, quota, and anti-dumping restrictions from developed countries managed easy exports of textiles, service sectors, small and cottage industries, mine and minerals, and so on. These sectors generated massive employment opportunities to literate and semi literate population. Globalization also helped multinational chains to invest in developing countries. Globalization too had a positive effects on poverty minimizing, especially India, china, whose rural population were living under savior poverty. Globalization accelerating migration from rural villages. Neglecting rural and researched based education weakening prolific purpose of globalization as rural inhabitants, poor and illiterates are not involved in Globalization process.

ChikunoCube - Natural Air Purifier Made from Bamboo Charcoal Powder

by sbrothier & 1 other (via)
Chikuno Cube is an air freshener made from ultra fine powder of bamboo charcoal and clay minerals. Bamboo Charcoal has high capacity of absorbing odors, but the secret to the superior absorption powder of Chikuno Cube is the micro-honeycomb structure that amplifies it's surface area by hundred fold. This 2-inch cube has the surface area equivalent of 4 football fields and works best in a small enclosed space such as refrigerator, closets and cars. It is eco-friendly and can be re-used for up to 1 year by just exposing it to direct sunlight every month for 6 hours. The quality is rooted in Kyoto’s craftsmanship, and it won the Japanese Good Design Award in 2008

Acquisition Satellite : Topic Serieux___Rapidement: pour capter le sat, il te faut un démodulateur

by decembre

Cold Boot Attacks on Encryption Keys - Center for information technology policy

by rike_
Contrary to popular assumption, DRAMs used in most modern computers retain their contents for seconds to minutes after power is lost, even at operating temperatures and even if removed from a motherboard. Although DRAMs become less reliable when they are not refreshed, they are not immediately erased, and their contents persist sufficiently for malicious (or forensic) acquisition of usable full-system memory images. We show that this phenomenon limits the ability of an operating system to protect cryptographic key material from an attacker with physical access. We use cold reboots to mount attacks on popular disk encryption systems — BitLocker, FileVault, dm-crypt, and TrueCrypt — using no special devices or materials. We experimentally characterize the extent and predictability of memory remanence and report that remanence times can be increased dramatically with simple techniques. We offer new algorithms for finding cryptographic keys in memory images and for correcting errors caused by bit decay. Though we discuss several strategies for partially mitigating these risks, we know of no simple remedy that would eliminate them.
