BBC - Digital Revolution Blog: Rushes Sequences - Biz Stone and Evan Williams interview - USA (Video)

by karlcow

there was a popular blogger and he also had a Twitter account and he was complaining that his cable was out, and he was I'm going to write about this cable company, Compass and how terrible they are and its going to be the number one search result in, in search engines for year to come. And they were monitoring Twitter search for any mentions of they're brand name. And they saw that within a few minutes and they replied to him on Twitter, and they said what seems to be the problem, they were going to send a van out to your house. And they had his cable fixed in like 30 minutes, so the next day the blog post was, Compass has great customer service, and it was like a, you know a complete reversal and we were like wow, they're really smart about it,

by oqdbpo

The One Fiber Optic Cable No One on the Dig for Tysons Rail Wants to Hit - washingtonpost.com

by night.kame

And they have snapped, accidentally, dozens of those carriers' lines, because even not-so-secret commercial lines sometimes don't show up on utility maps. Goguen, the utility manager, estimates that the rail project has already hit three dozen lines, sometimes doing no damage and other times grinding work to a halt or cutting power to retailers along Route 7. Even after extensively researching land records and maps and digging more than 600 test holes to determine utility locations, it's hard to avoid accidents on a project of such complexity and in such a busy place, he said.

Voilà ce qui se passe quand on fait de l'agile : ça sprinte, ça sprinte, et 3 ans après, il faut un démineur :-)

charlesv: Netvibes Slimserver Mashup = All Your MP3s Anywhere, In Any Browser

by rvoluer & 2 others (via)
jax tabs and all sorts of actually useful web 2.0 interface bits. One of the cooler things about netvibes is you can subscribe to podcasts on your netvibes page, and it will play them in a small flash (?) mp3 player at the top of the screen, no external application required. For a long time, I've been using SlimServer to listen to my music library at work / wherever. It monitors my iTunes database (but can point to folders), and will transcode on the fly to a lower bitrate so that I can stream at a listenable quality on my residential cable connection. I've been using winamp to listen to the stream, but that was a little clunky, and I thought there must be a better way. Looking on the netvibes ecosystem (a repository of rss feeds, podcasts, and custom netvibes mini-apps called modules), I couldn't find a SlimServer control/streaming module. So, I decided to hack together my own solution which, if I say so myself is pretty ding-dang neat. Here are some screenshots of it in action

Media Matters

by dggit & 11 others (via)
Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. Launched in May 2004, Media Matters for America put in place, for the first time, the means to systematically monitor a cross section of print, broadcast, cable, radio, and Internet media outlets for conservative misinformation — news or commentary that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda — every day, in real time. Using the website www.mediamatters.org as the principal vehicle for disseminating research and information, Media Matters posts rapid-response items as well as longer research and analytic reports documenting conservative misinformation throughout the media. Additionally, Media Matters works daily to notify activists, journalists, pundits, and the general public about instances of misinformation, providing them with the resources to rebut false claims and to take direct action against offending media institutions.

Chris Harrison - Internet Map: City-to-City Connections

by rike_ & 1 other
The Dimes Project provides several excellent data sets that describe the structure of the Internet. Using their most recent city edges data (Feb 2007), I created a set of visualizations that display how cities across the globe are interconnected (by router configuration and not physical backbone). In total, there are 89,344 connections. The first rendering displays the relative densities of Internet connectivity across the globe. The stronger the contrast, the more connectivity there is. It is immediately obvious, for example, that North America and Europe are considerably more connected than Africa or South America. However, it is important to note that this only reflect density of connections, and not usage. Hundreds of people may utilize a single connection in an internet cafe, often the only form of connectivity people have access to in developing nations. Additionally, three graphs showing network connections were created. I should note this is not the first time graphs like this have been created - I've seen dozens of variations, most being practical in nature (e.g. cable locations, bandwidth). I decided to pursue an aesthetic approach - one more visually intriguing and interesting to explore than useful. The intensity of edge contrast reflects the number of connections between the two points. No country borders or geographic features are shown. However, it should be fairly easy to orient yourself. Note: No projection has been applied to the geographical data. Latitudes and Longitudes were rounded to the nearest whole number and used in a flat coordinate system. This means that the planetary surface area represented by each point varies, skewing how the data (and densities - both point and edge) is shown!
