TuneIn

by sbrothier
That was our thesis for building TuneIn. Social and "new" media websites have enabled us all to create a river of information, most recently in the form of real-time streams. There is gold in those streams. Daily, hourly, minute-by-minute gold. People have started mining that gold, not only for their own personal benefit, but also for their friends. With services like Twitter and Facebook, people, rather than algorithms, are providing the most valuable take on what's worth reading, watching and hearing. They are bringing perspective to an otherwise fuzzy picture, helping determine what's signal and what's noise.

“Little Rat” Hackers Arrested

by alamat (via)
A group of hackers were recently arrested for using a new hacking tool that allows anyone to hack into any website, quickly, easily, and without any hacking experience. Police caught the two creators of this tool, who made more than 2 million yuan (US$293,000) by selling it to other hackers. Another four unnamed suspects were captured for using the software to steal online bank accounts or passwords for online games that they could sell.

Kroo Bay is an informal housing settlement located on the coastline in central Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. It has an estimated population of 5,500 people. Residents of Kroo Bay lack adequate access to sanitation and health services.[1] Health care workers in Kroo Bay report a high incidence of child malnutrition, which is caused by poverty and accentuated by rising global food prices.[2]

The Role of Uchidachi in Kata

by Takwann (via)
copyright © 2007 Steve Quinlan, all rights reserved This short article is in response to the article written by K. Taylor regarding the “Fallacy of Expanding Time in Kata”. The article examines a common trap that I think all martial artists who study Kata are guilty of falling into at some time or another. The issue is falling into a “well what if I did this instead…” line of thinking. The article gives some wonderful insight into why this is so commonly done, and a means of preventing ourselves from succumbing to its call.

HP Labs has joined the race to build an infrastructure for the emerging Internet of Things. The giant computing and IT services company has announced a project that aims to be a "Central Nervous System for the Earth" (CeNSE). It's a research and development program to build a planetwide sensing network, using billions of "tiny, cheap, tough and exquisitely sensitive detectors."

Marc Ngui | Drawing - Art

by karlcow

These drawings are a methodical interpretation of the first two chapters of A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schzophrenia (Wikipedia link) by Gilles Delueze and Felix Guattari, translated by Brian Massumi, University of Minnesota Press, 1987.

The drawings were created as a means of understanding the ideas being presented in the book.

Each drawing is labeled by chapter and paragraph.

Marc sent these diagrams to Brian Massumi, the translator of A Thousand Plateaus into English, who is currently one of the editors of Inflexions, the online journal for research-creation. The first volume of the journal includes some of these diagrams in the Tangents section.

Georg Essl leads University of Michigan students in iPhone orchestra

by alamat (via)
I imagine that in a lot of totally fundamental ways, pitching a university to let you teach a new course must be a lot like pitching a tech article to a mainstream magazine. It all starts with throwing random words at a sheet of brainstorming paper, then cynically deciding that while “iPhone: the future of music composition” is clearly ridiculous, it would look good as a headline [in the course catalog], so let’s see where it gets us anyway. Quickly inducing hyperventilation in order to simulate breathless excitement, you pick up the phone, call your editor [department head] and shout: “The iPhone is the future of music! No one else has done it before, so we’ll be at the forefront, reporting [teaching] about a fantastic new era meshing technology and art!”
