Firefox tools to help web application testing and development

There has been several blogs that lists the best Firefox extensions that are out there. Since Pingdom are operating in the web performance and monitoring field we decided to make our own list of valuable Firefox extensions.

In this list we don’t cover the well known extensions such as Web Developer Toolbar and Firebug but rather focused on “lesser known” ones that can help development and testing. Extensions that deal with HTML, CSS, SEO and design were also ignored since other blogs have already made good lists of these kinds of tools.

Let’s get on to the list.

Sniffing refactoring needs

While still messing around with the PHP_CodeSniffer Pear package, I took a somehow jealous 1000 feet look at some prominent code inspection tools of the Java community: PMD and Checkstyle. Browsing their available rule sets/checks I soon recognized that guaranteeing the coding standard adherence is just a partial aspect of these tools. The following post will focus on one of these additional aspects, which is finding problems related to the code size of the inspected code artifacts, by showing how to port two selected rules to sniffs for utilization with the PHP_CodeSniffer tool. These ported sniffs can be used to automatically spot obvious code smells in the code base and to signal the need to apply the appropriate and odour reducing activity known as refactoring. Further more a complete set of code size sniffs, going beyond the trageted realm of the sniffs to come, could be used to speed up the feedback loop and to reduce the effort for manual code reviews.

OpenSoft Development: Todos

No Program Left Behind
Sometimes you just don't want to take time going to your Applications folder or searching around your hard drive. Just click a quick hotkey (Command-Option-Control-T) and Todos will simply appear. Todos' job is simple. Todos doesn't do more than it says. Like its definition in Spanish, Todos will show you everything. Todos shows you all your applications in a complete dock. All of us have a plethora of programs, and the Apple dock just can't fit them all. Don't worry. Bring Todos up when you need to get to any of your apps. Click any application in Todos and it will instantly launch. Todos will fade away after application launch. Perhaps you don't want it go go away so fast? Just hold the command key and click. Todos will open the application and remain displayed. Don't forget to stand back and wow at all those cool icons for all of your applications. OS X has beautiful icons, why not see them more?
