Time based captioning with YouTube's JavaScript API

YouTube captioner

This is an example how you can use the YouTube JavaScript API to create a captioning interface for YouTube Videos.

Start playing the video below and hit the pause button - you will get a form field with the timestamp each time you stop the video.

When you hit the "get transcript" button the PHP script on the server will assemble a JSON object of the entered data.

Check the accompanying blog post Video captioning made easy with the YouTube JavaScript API for more information.

Wait till I come! » Blog Archive » Generating charts from accessible data tables and vice versa using the Google Charts API

Google have lately been praised for their chart API and my esteemed colleague Ed Eliot has a workaround for its restrictions in terms of caching and server hits.

I played around a bit with it and thought it very cool but it felt a bit clunky to add all these values to a URL when they could be in the document for those who cannot see pie charts. This is why I wrote a small script that converts data tables to charts using the API and a wee bit of JavaScript.

Using this script you can take a simple, valid and accessible data table like the following and it gets automatically converted to a pie chart.

AxsJAX Brings Accessibility Features to Web 2.0 | Compiler from Wired.com

Web 2.0 sites may be slick and easy to use for most people, but such sites often lack accessibility support, making them difficult, if not impossible, to use with screen readers and other assistive technologies.

In an effort to improve accessibility on AJAX-heavy websites, Google recently released the framework behind the new Google Reader tools as an open source project dubbed AxsJAX. The code has been reworked and most of the Google-specific features removed, which means it should work for just about any site that chooses to use it.
