The New York Times has published 5,000 people subject headings as linked open data under a CC BY license. We provide both RDF documents and a human-friendly HTML versions.

This set of programs lets you convert MARC subject authority data to SKOS and then serve it up as linked data for use on the semantic web. If you just want to get the triples, and don't want to be bothered with converting legacy MARC data, and running an instance of lcsh.info then you should probably just download the complete set of triples at:

The point of this exercise was mainly to show how thinking of the New York Times Topics as a controlled vocabulary, that can be serialized as a file, and still present on the Web, could be useful.

There is a need to tag real-world objects with concepts

This is partly obvious. Tags are a means to an end. But while they are already widely used to annotate document-like resources (web pages, photos, etc), I'd also like to tag things like my projects, people in my address book, and similar non-documents.

The Library of Congress Subject Headings have been placed online in SKOS. You can search within the set or download the entire thing in RDF/XML or a n-triples.

The geonames ontology is merged with SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organisation Systems). SKOS facilitates the building of thesauri, taxonomies and controlled vocabularies in a simpler way than OWL. This characteristic is used by geonames ontology to define a geographical feature types taxonomy.

For almost a year the Library of Congress Subject Headings were made available as SKOS from this site as an experiment. The goal was to leave the experiment active until there was a similar site running at the Library of Congress. However on December 18 I was asked to take the site down by the Library of Congress.

This ontology aims at providing a simple vocabulary for describing programmes. It covers brands, series (seasons), episodes, broadcast events, broadcast services, etc. Its development was funded by the BBC, and is heavily grounded on previous programmes data modelling work done there. The design and layout of this ontology document is based on the Music Ontology and FOAF Vocabulary specification documents, and was generated using the following hand-tuned onto_spec.pl SWI-Prolog script and HTML templates.

SKOS is a lightweight language for representing intuitive, semi-formal conceptual structures.

The 'validation' is performed by a Schemarama 2 service, and the Schemarama 2 framework is highly experimental. Note also that the service uses the SKOS Core Integrity Testing and Quality Assurance tests, which are highly experimental.

This page supplements a paper that describes a method to convert thesauri to SKOS

In a topic-oriented architecture such as DITA, content is authored in small, independent units that are assembled to provide help systems, books, courses, and other deliverables. Each unit of information answers a single question for a specific purpose. That is, each topic has specific, independent subject matter -- the very reason that these units of information are called topics. For instance, one topic might describe the format of a user definition file on a Web site while another topic explains the principles of Web site security and a third topic lays out the procedure for setting up Web site logins.

I’m trying out some ideas with tagging and folksonomies. I want to represent them using SKOS. There has been some exploration of this recently by Karl Dubost and Richard Newman helped along by that maven Danny. I couldn’t change the output of any existing tagging systems so I did the next best thing and wrote my own: tinky.org
