Another of the exciting shows I saw while on my recent trip to NYC was a survey of the textile works of Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984) at Japan Society, a Japanese designer who took his inspiration from the traditional techniques of stencil dyeing. This kimono was stunning in its color harmonies and surprising shapes. There were others just as dramatically beautiful. Some of the most startling designs were on Noren, or entrance curtains, their shapes strong and simple.
I had the good fortune to tour the comprehensive survey of works by textile master Serizawa Keisuke at the Japan Society, curated with admirable rigor by the society's gallery director Joe Earle, with two formidable blondes, Alexandra Peers of the Wall Street Journal and Alice Judelson of I-20 Gallery. As Peers commented, using an old journalistic term, "They buried the lede," by putting the jewels of the exhibition, Serizawa's incomparable kimonos from the 1960s, in a back room of the gallery, where you might miss them.

]]>During his more than 14 years in Hong Kong, German-born photographer Michael Wolf‘s perspective on his adopted city has boiled down to an essence of density – the hemmed-in, closely built environment which shapes everything from its peoples‘ lifestyles to their outlooks and even dreams. In Hong Kong Inside Outside, Wolf collects the works of his two previous collections – Architecture of Density and 100x100 – into a two-volume set focusing on the visual elements of one of the world’s most crowded cities.
Trine Søndergaard (b. 1972) is a photo-based visual artist, born and based in Denmark. She graduated from The Danish School of Art Photography Fatamorgana in 1996. Her works range from documentary and diary sketches to conceptual photography. In recent years she has focused primarily on the landscape and portrait.
Nicolai Howalt (b. 1970) is a photobased artist. Born and based in Denmark. Nicolai Howalts photographic works carry references to the tradition of documentarism. His work is typically based in specific environments. Boxer (2003) was a photographic portrait project about young boys shot before and after a match. In 2001 Howalt presented the series 3X1 about a family living in a surburban counsil flat. He recieved Niels Wessel Bagge's Art Prize 2008 and the ParisPhoto BMV Special Jury Award 2006. His work is represented in major public and private collections, including Museo de Arte Contemoraneo de Castilla y Leon, Spain. Museum of Fine Art Houston, USA and The Danish Arts Foundation, Denmark, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Israel og Maison Européenne de Photographie, Paris.
