I imagine that in a lot of totally fundamental ways, pitching a university to let you teach a new course must be a lot like pitching a tech article to a mainstream magazine. It all starts with throwing random words at a sheet of brainstorming paper, then cynically deciding that while “iPhone: the future of music composition” is clearly ridiculous, it would look good as a headline [in the course catalog], so let’s see where it gets us anyway. Quickly inducing hyperventilation in order to simulate breathless excitement, you pick up the phone, call your editor [department head] and shout: “The iPhone is the future of music! No one else has done it before, so we’ll be at the forefront, reporting [teaching] about a fantastic new era meshing technology and art!”

Les premiers web-docus ? L'un des plus attendus pour 2010 en France est "Prison Valley", un webdoc dans le couloir de la mort. "Prison Valley", co-produit par Arte.tv et Upian.com, passe au crible l'"industrie carcérale" aux Etats-Unis. Réalisé par les journalistes David Dufresne et Philippe Brault, ce docu multimédia nous entraîne dans les couloirs d'un complexe carcéral du Colorado constitué de 13 prisons, dont Supermax. A la clé, un budget de 200 000 €... et donc similaire à celui d'un docu télé classique. Un site trailer (ici, donc) et une bande-annonce en présentent déjà un avant-goût.

This imaginative and insightful approach got me thinking about a related problem I’ve been keen to address for some time: data entry. How can we use paper as a more effective channel for information flow during and after humanitarian emergencies?

L’atelier ne fait pas de distinction entre low-tech et high-tech. les supports de création peuvent aller de Macintosh à Windows, en passant par Gameboy, Atari, Palm, PocketPC, Apple ][ ... L’atelier s’oppose à toute notion de sous-traitance, et préfére travailler avec les autres ateliers dans une logique d’interfaçage.

I quite agree with Je Sung Park when he says that disposable cameras and cell phones have gained acceptance, so why don’t we take the next step and bring out a disposable computer. His Recyclable Paper Laptop is quite a raw version and could do with some refinement. It uses recycled paper or pulp material all packed in layers. This is so that you can easily replace the damaged portions (even corrugated paper will tear easy). The vibe of a Paper Laptop is intriguing, I kno eventually someone will figure out the tech bit, so let’s see who will take the bait.

Des rubriques « geeks », dans les magazines, j’en ai souvent lu ... Et franchement, bonne grosse surprise. Un vrai magazine (donc beau papier), pas trop cher (4,90 €), qui sort tous les 2 mois et qui aborde la culture Geek dans toute sa splendeur… On y parle de techno (un peu quand même), de cinéma, de musique, de jeux vidéos, de manga, et de tout un tas de tendances geeks en pleine évolution. Par exemple,j’y ai découvert April March (interview aussi), la cuisine moléculaire et l’historique du cinéma d’animatroniques. J’ai aussi pu mieux comprendre d’où venait cet engouement pour la musique 8 bits ou encore pourquoi NoLife était une chaîne vraiment hors norme (et géniale !). Il y a aussi un très bon article sur les nouvelles séries US fantastique / SF, ce qui m’a permis de voir ce que j’allais faire chauffer sur Megavidéo prochainement (Tipiiiiiiak !) et un reportage sur les subbers (gens qui font les sous titres de vos séries préférées).
